A young man approached Jesus and said,
“Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?”
He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good?
There is only One who is good.
If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
He asked him, “Which ones?”
And Jesus replied, “You shall not kill;
you shall not commit adultery;
you shall not steal;
you shall not bear false witness;
honor your father and your mother;
and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The young man said to him,
“All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?”
Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go,
sell what you have and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad,
for he had many possessions.
We all would love to know what it takes to get to heaven, right? That is what this young man wanted to learn from Jesus – how to gain eternal life. When Jesus tells him that he must follow the commandments, the young man was encouraged because he was doing that. But what was he missing?
Jesus raised the bar and told him that if he wanted to be perfect, “sell what you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” And the young men went away sad, unwilling to part with his “many possessions”.
How would you do with this two part test?
1) Are you following the commandments? Are you loving God by making Him the top priority in your life? Do you honor God by your words and actions, especially keeping holy the Sabbath? Do you love your neighbor? Do you avoid gossip, theft, adultery, etc.?
2) If you are following the commandments are you ready to take it to the next level by selling what you have and giving it to the poor? Is there something in your life that you are not willing to give up for the sake of Jesus? Do you store up treasure here on earth or are you storing up treasure in heaven? If Jesus told you to sell everything you have right now and give it away, what is the first thing that comes to mind that you are not willing to give up? That may be the thing to which you are too strongly attached. Can you let go of the attachment for the Kingdom?
