Thought for October 2 – Guardian Angels

Matthew 18:1-5, 10

The disciples approached Jesus and said,
“Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?”
He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said,
“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children,
you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.
Whoever humbles himself like this child
is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.
And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones,
for I say to you that their angels in heaven
always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”

Today the Church honors our Guardian Angels, which are referred to in this Gospel passage.  As Jesus places a child in the midst of the disciples He says, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.

We all have probably had experiences in which something completely unexplainable happens; maybe we were protected in some unbelievable way…  I have experiences when I’ve been driving and it seems like an accident is inevitable, and somehow I avoid any problem.  I have had experiences in which I’ve asked for something and immediately the prayer is answered right in front of my eyes.

In the Gospel, Jesus says that we all should become like little children and that their angels look upon the face of God in heaven.  We all have angels that are with God in heaven and look out for us here on earth.

I once heard a story of a woman who was saved from a rape attempt because the man who was thinking about raping her saw four huge men surrounding the woman.  Later this man was arrested as they found him hiding behind some bushes.  The woman was asked about the four men surrounding her and she said that she was alone.  But she was praying for protection because she was walking in a dark area alone.  She believes, and so do I, that these were her guardian angels.

It should be so comforting to all of us that we have angels in heaven looking out for our well-being.  Let us pray that they continue to watch out for us.  May we pray for protection every time we get in the car to drive.  May we pray for guidance and intercession to our heavenly Father.  And may we become like little children as Jesus encourages us in the Gospel.

Do I believe in angels?

Do I pray for protection and guidance from my guardian angels?

Have a blessed day!

Here is the Spanish translation

Mateo 18:1-5, 10

“Miren que no menosprecien a uno de estos pequeños;

Fr. Burke

  1. This post came in great timing, my brother was driving to work last week and fell asleep at the wheel on 1-80, he was driving about 65 MPH, he crashed into the barrier and was able to walk away from the accident with just a few cuts and bruises on his left leg. The police, insurance adjuster and ER doctors were all shocked that he walked away from the accident given that he completely totaled his car. After this experience we all know that someone was looking out for him, because of situations like this I truly believe is guardian angels.

  2. This is a very good message Fr. Burke. I pray for our Lord Jesus to protect me from all evil. And have a special prayer to my guardian angel. God sends special angels to us all, to look over us. Even when you do not see them, Saints & Guardian Angels can be close to us – this is what I believe. God-bless!! Thank-you!
