Thought for Friday, 5th Week of Easter

John 15:12-17

Jesus said to his disciples:
“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you slaves,
because a slave does not know what his master is doing.
I have called you friends,
because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.
This I command you: love one another.”

==============================================

This is one of my favorite Scripture passages.  “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”  Jesus showed us the depth of His love for us by dying on the cross.  Stop and think about that.  Our God, the One who created the universe and each one of us, loved us to the point of becoming like us in all things.  Then He willingly suffered one of the most cruel deaths possible in order to save us.

Last night I watched an amazing movie entitled “Giuseppe Mostaci”, the true story of an Italian doctor who was canonized a saint in 1987.  He died in 1927.  Dr. Mostaci was talented enough to rise the ladder and become wealthy like his best friend, Giorgio, who also was a doctor.  However, Giuseppe’s heart was with the poor.  He laid down his life, his plans, his career in order to serve the poor.  He treated the poor at no cost and often bought the medicine from his own money.  He died with practically no material wealth, but he had built up treasure in heaven.

I highly recommend that you find this movie because it will inspire you to grow in holiness.  It shows clearly how we find true joy in life not by the material possessions we gather but by laying down our lives for Christ and His people.

My mother was a great example for me.  She daily sacrificed her desires, her plans, her life so that me and my brothers could have a better life.  She was following our Lord’s teaching.  And I have found as a priest that when I pour out my life for others, the Lord blesses me abundantly.  I don’t need things to make me happy; it’s all about doing the will of God.  And when I’m selfish, nothing turns out well.

How am I laying down my life for Christ and others?

When am I most selfish?

Lay down your life for Christ and watch to see what happens.  We cannot outdo God in generosity!

Have a blessed weekend!

Here is the Spanish translation:

Juan 15:12-17

Los he llamado amigos,

  1. Father, thank you for sharing your story of your journey with us. I saw you this evening on EWTN and the discussion about spending time in adoration of the Eucharist and your “first” communion. I do struggle every day thinking that I surrender myself to God but just listening and then going out to your blog because it struck something inside of me to go and see what you have to share. What I am learning that I am not surrendering myself because I am placing conditions in my surrendering. Your thoughts you shared have told me to be quiet and listen. God knows what I struggle with but I must surrender all to him. Your thoughts you share or the ones that I have just read this evening all pointed to that – surrender! You also shared that what helps you from distraction is writing things down that are on your mind and to also talk with Jesus about what is going on with your struggles or distractions. This has been very helpful.

Thank you and God Bless you!
