Thought for Tuesday, 15th Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 11:20-24

Jesus began to reproach the towns
where most of his mighty deeds had been done,
since they had not repented.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable
for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum:

Will you be exalted to heaven?
You will go down to the netherworld.

For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom,
it would have remained until this day.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable
for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

Have you ever asked Jesus for a sign?  I have and I think most people have done so as well.  We want to know for certain whether or not we should do something.  For example, working with vocations I have spoken to many young man who just want a sign from God to know whether or not they should be priests.  This is very human.

However, at the same time if we are constantly asking for signs, we lack faith.  Faith is a belief in things unseen.  Faith is the ability to trust in God and His presence with us, even when we don’t feel Him or perceive Him near us.

Jesus performed many signs and wonders among the people of Chorazin and Bethsaida.  And yet they didn’t repent from their sins.  They didn’t understand the great miracles that Jesus performed in front of them.  The miracles were not the point.  Jesus was asking for faith.  The miracles were only signs for them to believe that He was/is the Son of God.

I love the story of Mother Theresa.  She went many years without sensing the presence of God in her life.  Her prayer was completely dry.  She didn’t get any tingling sensations that can accompany prayer or powerful experiences of God.  And yet she remained faithful to her mission.  How?  She would remember the experience of God from her past.  She remembered God calling her to religious life.  She remembered God calling her to start a new religious order.  After that there was dryness in her spiritual life.  But she knew deep in her soul that God was real, that God did not abandon her, that God would be with her in the important ministry in Calcutta.  What a great example of faith!

Have you experienced the presence of God in your life?

If so, write these experiences in a journal, because you will need to read them again someday.

If you have not had a powerful experience of God, keep searching.  Keep asking God to reveal Himself to you.   Ask God to open the eyes of your soul to see the beauty of God around you.

Are you still asking for signs?

Do you have faith in Jesus that He will never abandon you?

Do you trust the Lord?

Do you need to repent from your sins and change your life in any way?

The Kingdom of God is near.  Jesus is calling us to repentance.  His desire is to save each one of us.  Don’t wait!  Make today the day that you change your life forever by asking the Lord into your heart.  He is not going to appear to you in signs and wonders every day because He wants us to have faith.  He promised to never abandon us – and God always keeps His promises.

Have a blessed day,

Fr. Burk

Here is the Spanish translation:

MatEO 11:20-24

¡No esperes!

Fr. Burke
