Thought for December 18

Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,

which means “God is with us.”
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.
He had no relations with her until she bore a son,
and he named him Jesus.

Although we hear this story every year, we should never tire of reading about God’s love for us.  Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, which is incredible!  God prepared the perfect vessel for His Son to enter the world.

Understandably, Joseph was going to divorce Mary quietly because he didn’t want to expose her to shame and he didn’t comprehend what was happening.  Imagine being in Joseph’s shoes.  What would you do if your fiancé told you she was pregnant and you knew that you were not the father?

Before Joseph could divorce Mary, an angel appeared in Joseph’s dream to tell him about the plan.  This child should be named Jesus, which means “God saves”.  And this plan has been predicted by the prophets for a long time.

Joseph was such a righteous and faithful man that he listened to the angel and took Mary into his home.  Mary and Joseph were faithful, attentive and cooperated with God’s plans completely.

Please don’t allow this story just to pass you by today without quiet meditation.  I believe that God works intimately in each one of our lives.  He labors to love us.  We may not have the miraculous experience of angels appearing in our dreams, but God is speaking to us regularly.

Am I trying to live a righteous, virtuous life like Joseph?

Do I listen for God speaking to me in prayer, in dreams, in every moment?

Peace,

Fr. Burke

Here is the Spanish translation:

Mateo 1:18-25

Paz,
Fr. Burke

  2. Hi Father Burke…

Since I’m learning all of this I have a question regarding this scripture …

Why didn’t the Jewish people believe this? Where can I find this prophesied in the Old Testament ?

I can only imagine what it must have been like for them … Especially in that time…

I’ve been going to daily mass and doing all the novenas too…

I still want to make my confirmation but I can’t until my marriage is blessed but my husband doesn’t understand so I’m being patient like Father John told me to…

I have the most amazing mentors and teachers in my life and all I really want is to learn and get closer to God… I’ve learned so much and my spiritual journey has been so divine and strange and scary all at once…

I really am interested to know who the prophet was and were to find it in the bible …

    • Mary, this is a good question. There are many good web sites that will answer your question, but here is one to start with…
      http://www.catholicapologetics.info/apologetics/judaism/messiah.htm

There are many prophecies in the OT that foretold the coming of the Messiah and Jesus fulfills them. It is so beautiful to enter into this mystery of God’s love as it unfolds throughout history.

      peace,
