Luke 16:19-31
Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps
that fell from the rich man’s table.
Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.
And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
for I am suffering torment in these flames.’
Abraham replied, ‘My child,
remember that you received what was good during your lifetime
while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established
to prevent anyone from crossing
who might wish to go from our side to yours
or from your side to ours.’
He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him
to my father’s house,
for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.’
But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.’
He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham,
but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
Then Abraham said,
‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded
if someone should rise from the dead.'”

Please pray for us who will be participating in the Spanish Cursillo starting Thursday and finishing Sunday. This is a Catholic retreat that began in Spain and is now all over the world. I highly recommend that you accept an invitation to attend a Cursillo weekend. Please pray that the Holy Spirit guide the team and fill all of the hearts of those attending.
Today’s fundamental in our spiritual spring training is compassion, especially for the poor. The rich man ate well and ignored the poor man Lazarus (different from Jesus’ friend Lazarus who was raised from the dead), who lay outside his doorway. The rich man did not even acknowledge that this man was a human being, let alone treat him with respect and dignity. Lazarus went to heaven and the rich man went to hell. You can imagine how the rich man wanted to change his ways after dying, but it was too late.
So the rich man wanted to send a warning to his brothers, but Abraham told him that his brothers should listen to Moses and the prophets. They probably would not even respond to someone rising from the dead (a reference to Jesus).
If you died today, what would the Lord say to you?
How would that change the way you lived today?
Do you treat everyone with dignity and respect?
Who is the Lord placing in my path today to love?

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los fariseos: “Había un hombre rico, que se vestía de púrpura y telas finas y banqueteaba espléndidamente cada día. Y un mendigo, llamado Lázaro, yacía a la entrada de su casa, cubierto de llagas y ansiando llenarse con las sobras que caían de la mesa del rico. Y hasta los perros se acercaban a lamerle las llagas.
Sucedió, pues, que murió el mendigo y los ángeles lo llevaron al seno de Abraham. Murió también el rico y lo enterraron. Estaba éste en el lugar de castigo, en medio de tormentos, cuando levantó los ojos y vio a lo lejos a Abraham y a Lázaro junto a él.
Entonces gritó: ‘Padre Abraham, ten piedad de mí. Manda a Lázaro que moje en agua la punta de su dedo y me refresque la lengua, porque me torturan estas llamas’. Pero Abraham le contestó: ‘Hijo, recuerda que en tu vida recibiste bienes y Lázaro, en cambio, males. Por eso él goza ahora de consuelo, mientras que tú sufres tormentos. Además, entre ustedes y nosotros se abre un abismo inmenso, que nadie puede cruzar, ni hacia allá ni hacia acá’.
El rico insistió: ‘Te ruego, entonces, padre Abraham, que mandes a Lázaro a mi casa, pues me quedan allá cinco hermanos, para que les advierta y no acaben también ellos en este lugar de tormentos’. Abraham le dijo: ‘Tienen a Moisés y a los profetas; que los escuchen’. Pero el rico replicó: ‘No, padre Abraham. Si un muerto va a decírselo, entonces sí se arrepentirán’. Abraham repuso: ‘Si no escuchan a Moisés y a los profetas, no harán caso, ni aunque resucite un muerto’”.

Por favor, oren por nosotros los que vamos a estar participando en el Cursillo de español comenzando el jueves y terminando el domingo. Este es un retiro católico que comenzó en España y ahora está en todo el mundo. Recomiendo mucho que acepte una invitación para asistir a un Cursillo de fin de semana. Por favor, oren para que el Espíritu Santo guíe al equipo y llene todos los corazones de los que asistirán.
Lo fundamental en nuestro entrenamiento espiritual de primavera hoy día es la compasión, especialmente por los pobres. El hombre rico comió bien e ignoro al pobre Lázaro (diferente del amigo de Jesús Lázaro que fue resucitado de entre los muertos), que estaba fuera de su puerta. El hombre rico ni siquiera reconoció que este hombre era un ser humano, y mucho menos lo trato con respeto y dignidad. Lázaro fue al cielo y el hombre rico fue al infierno. Se pueden imaginar cómo el hombre rico quería cambiar sus caminos después de morir, pero ya era demasiado tarde.
Así que el hombre rico quiso enviar una advertencia a sus hermanos, pero Abraham le dijo que sus hermanos deben escuchar a Moisés y a los profetas. Probablemente ellos ni siquiera le responderían a alguien resucitado de entre los muertos (una referencia a Jesús).
Si murieras hoy, ¿Qué te diría el Señor?
¿Cómo cambiaría la forma en que vives hoy?
¿Tratas a todos con dignidad y respeto?
¿A quién está el Señor poniendo hoy en mi camino para amar?
