Thought for August 24 – Feast of St. Bartholomew

John 1:45-51

Philip found Nathanael and told him,
“We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law,
and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
But Nathanael said to him,
“Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
“Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him.”
Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
Nathanael answered him,
“Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this.”
And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened and the angels of God
ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Today the Church remembers St. Bartholomew.

What strikes me in this passage today is how intimately Jesus knew Nathanael.  He had never met Jesus before yet Jesus knew there was “no duplicity in him.”  In the same way, Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves.  He loves us as His beloved sons and daughters.  He knew us in our mother’s womb.  He sees into our hearts and knows what we are thinking and feeling.

This can be a beautiful thing to contemplate when our hearts are pure and we have nothing to hide.  We are happy to allow the Lord into any part of our lives.

However, if we are hiding something or living a double life, it can be frightening to think about the Lord knowing everything about us.  We try to hide things from others and even from God.  Even though this is impossible we try to deceive ourselves by justifying our actions.  We can make an excuse for any of our actions, but the truth will set us free.

Let us bring everything to the light of Christ.  May we be reconciled with God for He always wants to heal and love us.  You may be carrying extra weight on your shoulders and are not aware of it.  Give it to the Lord.  Lay it all at the feet of Jesus.  Bring it to the light and experience the freedom as a son or daughter of God.  Go to confession on a regular basis, for the evil wants us to bury our sins and act like nothing is wrong.  This only leads to explosions later.  Give it to Jesus and live a life of freedom and peace.

Have a blessed day!
