We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,
about those who have fallen asleep,
so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose,
so too will God, through Jesus,
bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord,
that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,
will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord himself, with a word of command,
with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God,
will come down from heaven,
and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive, who are left,
will be caught up together with them in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air.
Thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore, console one another with these words.
HOPE is something that we need to hear more about in this world today. If we watch the evening news for just a few minutes we are bombarded with sad and disturbing news – war, violence, death, etc.
Many people experience difficult things in their own lives – divorce, broken relationships, loss of jobs, death of a friend of family member, etc. Where do we turn when these things pile up in our lives?
Try Jesus Christ… Where do we find hope when we are surrounded by bad news and difficult circumstances? How can we go on when it seems that God is so distant?
Listen to these words of St. Paul to the Thessalonians: “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” We must keep our eyes focused on Jesus and the goal of eternal life. There is nothing beyond the Lord’s reach – He conquered even death itself and promises us who remain faithful to Him that we will live with Him for all eternity.
Jesus never promised to take away our pain and suffering. He never said that following Him would be easy. In fact, He said that to follow Him we have to pick up our cross daily. We will be blessed when others persecute us for His sake. Our sorrow will be turned to joy.
Where do you find your hope? If you place your hope in human beings, they will let you down. If you place your hope in your job, one day that job will end. If you place your hope in money or material things, it cannot satisfy our deepest need and will all be left behind.
Where is my hope? My hope lies in Jesus Christ and His promise of eternal life. But my hope is not just in the distant future, but I can experience joy and peace right now in this life if I place my trust and hope in Him.
Where do you find your hope?
Have a blessed day!
