Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath.
And a woman was there who for eighteen years
had been crippled by a spirit;
she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect.
When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said,
“Woman, you are set free of your infirmity.”
He laid his hands on her,
and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.
But the leader of the synagogue,
indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath,
said to the crowd in reply,
“There are six days when work should be done.
Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day.”
The Lord said to him in reply, “Hypocrites!
Does not each one of you on the sabbath
untie his ox or his ass from the manger
and lead it out for watering?
This daughter of Abraham,
whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now,
ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day
from this bondage?”
When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated;
and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.
I recently heard that a young lady from our diocese was healed from a debilitating illness this summer while attending a conference at Franciscan University in Steubenville. Her condition had worsened recently and she was told that she would be in a wheelchair the rest of her life. She attended adoration at the conference and the priest was processing through the congregation with the Blessed Sacrament. As the Lord passed by her she was healed. She jumped up and began glorifying God for her instant healing while her mother sobbed with joy. This happened in 2015! Jesus is still active today.
Imagine being present in this scriptural scene with Jesus. You are in the synagogue listening to Him preach. Next to you is this woman who has not been able to stand for years because she is extremely crippled. Jesus walks over to her with love in His eyes. He lays hands on her and says, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” A miracle has occurred before your very eyes! She stands up for the first time in 18 years and begins to glorify God! You cannot believe your eyes. All those who are present are mystified. What is it about this man that people are cured of severe illnesses?
We have a God who loves us immensely. God wants to love us, to heal us, to draw us into a radical union with Himself. His heart is moved to compassion when we are suffering.
Jesus asked Bartimaeus what he wanted? He wanted to see and Jesus granted him his wish. Jesus told him that his faith has healed him.
In which part of your life do you need healing?
Do you trust that Jesus can do anything?
Have a blessed day!
