Thought for December 18

MATTHEW 1:18-25
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,

which means “God is with us.”
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.
He had no relations with her until she bore a son,
and he named him Jesus.

We are one week away from Christmas and today we hear Matthew’s version of the birth of Jesus. Mary “was found with child through the Holy Spirit”. I love this image that Mary is the spouse of the Holy Spirit. Her “yes” brought the Savior into the world. We too are called to give our “yes” to the Holy Spirit so that Christ can shine His light through us into this world.

When Joseph heard that Mary was pregnant he was going to “divorce her quietly” to not expose her to shame. Joseph loved Mary and only wanted what was best for her but he did not understand what was going on until the angel appeared to him in a dream. Just as Mary listened to the angel and believed, Joseph did the same. As incredible as this story must have seemed to both Joseph and Mary, they believed and they acted. They were about to be parents of the Savior of the world!

The Holy Spirit is within us and speaks to us every day. God wants to work powerfully through each one of us. Angels also speak to us and guide us through dreams and many other ways.

Do we notice God active in our lives?
Are we willing to follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit with deep faith?
Are we being a light to the world as the Holy Spirit prompts us?

As we prepare for Christmas in one week, may we put aside our busyness and focus on what this season is all about. May we listen for that voice of the Holy Spirit within us. May we be aware of the angels at our side.

Have a blessed day!

Spanish translation:

MATEO 1:18-25
