When Jesus saw a crowd around him,
he gave orders to cross to the other shore.
A scribe approached and said to him,
“Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests,
but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”
Another of his disciples said to him,
“Lord, let me go first and bury my father.”
But Jesus answered him, “Follow me,
and let the dead bury their dead.”
How committed are we to following the Lord? A scribe tells Jesus, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Does he think it is going to be easy to follow Jesus?
Jesus’ response is striking. “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” In other words, God takes care of the animals and birds. However, Jesus had no set place to sleep. I think Jesus was challenging the scribe to say, “If you want to follow me, you have to trust that God will take care of you like He takes care of the animals. There are no guarantees, but do you trust God.”
Then another disciple wanted to bury his father before following Jesus. This seems like a reasonable request. But Jesus says, “Let the dead bury the dead.” In other words, “I will take care of your family. Trust me with everything in your life.” God loves our family and friends even more than we do. Do we trust Him enough that He will take care of them?
What keeps you from trusting Jesus completely?
Do you have any excuses that keep you from following Jesus with your life?
Have a blessed day!
