Thought for Thursday, 30th Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 13:31-35
Some Pharisees came to Jesus and said,
“Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.”
He replied, “Go and tell that fox,
‘Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow,
and on the third day I accomplish my purpose.
Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day,
for it is impossible that a prophet should die
outside of Jerusalem.’
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,
how many times I yearned to gather your children together
as a hen gathers her brood under her wings,
but you were unwilling!
Behold, your house will be abandoned.
But I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say,
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem where He will accomplish His purpose of salvation – dying and rising to save us. Can you imagine his anguish? He has done nothing but love, heal and teach about the Kingdom and so many people have rejected Him.
What a tender image of His love He gives us: “…how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings…” Jesus came to gather us together under His wings of love, yet so many were unwilling to receive this love and turned their backs on God.
Let us take time today to reflect on this tender love of God for us. Imagine yourself in a warm embrace with God the Father or with Jesus. Allow yourself to receive the unconditional love that only God can give us.
Sometimes our tendency is to shy away from this love because we don’t feel worthy. We know we have sinned and are far from God. But remember the prodigal son story… the Father was there waiting for his son with open arms. So if you feel far from God today, come to Him in humility. God cannot deny you because you are made in God’s image and likeness. He only wants to love you. Allow Him to do that.
This is the foundation of the spiritual life – to know that God loves me unconditionally. All other things build upon this basic foundation. If we don’t have this foundation, the house can crumble even when there is a slight wind or turmoil in our lives.
Have a blessed day!

Spanish translation:
LUCAS 13:31-35

  1. Cheryl, I’m forwarding today’s thought from Fr. Burke. Don’t know if you came to the sessions he led last year but I like be his daily blog. If you care to receive his thoughts, at the bottom of the page (below Spain’s translation) is the address to sign up.

Enjoy this beautiful day . . . Just Jeri

  2. Not sure why it took me TWO years (guess life happens) but here I am… excited to be part of your daily inspirational messages.

Today’s message is poignant…In this seemingly hostile world, we are ALL in need of God’s unconditional love.

  3. What a beautiful reflection. Truly believing that God loves me unconditionally, without having to earn it or be perfect is probably my biggest struggle. Any helpful advice for how to open myself up, flaws and all, in the imperfect present, to His love and accept it?
