Thought for Thursday, 3rd Week of Advent

Thought for Thursday, 3rd Week of Advent

LUKE 7:24-30
When the messengers of John the Baptist had left,
Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John.
“What did you go out to the desert to see – a reed swayed by the wind?
Then what did you go out to see?
Someone dressed in fine garments?
Those who dress luxuriously and live sumptuously
are found in royal palaces.
Then what did you go out to see?
A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
This is the one about whom Scripture says:

Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
he will prepare your way before you.

I tell you,
among those born of women, no one is greater than John;
yet the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.”
(All the people who listened, including the tax collectors,
who were baptized with the baptism of John,
acknowledged the righteousness of God;
but the Pharisees and scholars of the law,
who were not baptized by him,
rejected the plan of God for themselves.
==================
Jesus asked the people what they were expecting when they went out to the desert to see John. Did they expect to see a king, a prince or a prophet? They must have been shocked by John. He wore camel hair shirts and ate grasshoppers. So many learned people thought he was crazy. However, the humble were able to see that he truly was the forerunner of the Messiah.

John’s appearance was a perfect preparation for this Messiah. Jesus didn’t come as people expected either. He was born in a manger. He taught us to love our enemies, not seek revenge. He taught us to take the lowest seat and to humble ourselves. He literally laid down His life on a cross, the symbol of death for the worst criminals. Jesus said that we have to lose our lives in order to save it.

The Pharisees and scholars must have been saying, “Are you kidding me?” They must have thought Jesus was an imposter for the Messiah. That is why they had Him crucified and mocked Him as the “King of the Jews”. They rejected God’s plan and were not baptized by John. However, the simple, the humble, the tax collectors, the prostitutes and the marginalized accepted Jesus as the Son of God and were baptized.

Where do we find Jesus in our world today?
Do we miss His presence right in front of us?
Do we try to find happiness in the flesh and glory of this world?
Or do we find Jesus in the simple, humble and lowly?
Maybe Jesus will surprise us today…

Have a blessed day!

All the people that heard him, and the publicans, accepted the plan of justice of God, being baptized by the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and scribes did not accept that baptism and foiled in his own hurt, God’s plan.
