Thought for December 17

Thought for December 17

Matthew 1:1-17

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,
the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Abraham became the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah,
whose mother was Tamar.
Perez became the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
Ram the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab became the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
Salmon the father of Boaz,
whose mother was Rahab.
Boaz became the father of Obed,
whose mother was Ruth.
Obed became the father of Jesse,
Jesse the father of David the king.

David became the father of Solomon,
whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.
Solomon became the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asaph.
Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Joram,
Joram the father of Uzziah.
Uzziah became the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amos,
Amos the father of Josiah.
Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers
at the time of the Babylonian exile.

After the Babylonian exile,
Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
Zerubbabel the father of Abiud.
Abiud became the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
Azor the father of Zadok.
Zadok became the father of Achim,
Achim the father of Eliud,
Eliud the father of Eleazar.
Eleazar became the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.

Thus the total number of generations
from Abraham to David
is fourteen generations;
from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations;
from the Babylonian exile to the Christ,
fourteen generations.
=====================
Each year on December 17 the Church asks us to read the genealogy of Jesus according to Matthew. We trace Jesus’ his lineage back from Abraham to David to Joseph and to Jesus.

One of the interesting things about Matthew’s genealogy is that he includes some interesting characters that are not included in the gospel of Luke. For example, Ahaz and Manasseh promoted worship of false gods in the temple. Rahab was a prostitute. And we all know the story of David’s adulterous affair with Bathsheba, wife of Uriah and mother of Solomon. David then had Uriah killed in battle when Bathsheba became pregnant.

Why would Matthew include these “shady” characters in the genealogy of Jesus?

1) Jesus was not determined by His ancestors. Jesus was fully human and fully divine. We see the humanity of Jesus in a powerful way when we look at this last. And although His family tree had some rotten apples, God still was able to do amazing things in Jesus’ life.

2) In the same way, we are not determined by our family history. As I listen to some of the stories of my ancestors from my Dad, I realize that my family was not perfect either.

3) Nor are we determined by our own history. We may have a past that is full of sin and bad choices. Our humanity might have been on full display in many instances. But through God’s mercy in the Sacraments of baptism, Eucharist and reconciliation, we can become a new creation. We are not a product of our past decisions, but our identity is found in being children of God.

Take time to reflect on your own family genealogy today.
Who are some of the characters in your family?
What are some of the skeletons even in my own history?
Do I believe that Jesus can create me anew through the power of His mercy?

Lord, thank you for all of my family members who have come before me, especially those who have passed on their faith from one generation to the next. Thank you also for those who were far from perfect. Help me to continue to pass on this faith that I have received. And help me to know my true identity in you. I know that you can create something completely new in me today.

Today, Saturday, is day 7 of our novena (9 days) for my Dad and all those who are suffering from cancer. I have good news to share. The doctors told us that my Dad’s cancer is operable and looks to be treatable. He has to gain strength and then they hope to do surgery in the next few weeks to remove the cancer. Then they will determine if he needs chemotherapy. The prognosis is good. Let’s keep praying for his healing and the healing of all those with cancer.

PRAYERS TO ST. PEREGRINE

St. Peregrine, whom Holy Mother Church has declared Patron of those suffering from Cancer, I confidently turn to you for help in Tod Masters’ present sickness. I beg your kind intercession. Ask God to relieve him of this sickness, if it be his Holy Will. Plead with the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Sorrows, whom you loved so tenderly and in union with whom you have suffered the pains of Cancer, that she may help Tod Masters with her powerful prayers and loving consolation.

But if it should be God’s Holy Will that he bears this sickness, obtain for him the courage and strength to accept these trials from the loving hand of God with patience and resignation, because Our Lord knows what is best for the salvation of Tod Masters’ soul. St. Peregrine, be our friend and patron. Help us to imitate you in accepting suffering, and to unite ourselves with Jesus Crucified and the Mother of Sorrows, as you did. I offer my pains to God with all the love of my heart, for his glory and the salvation of souls, especially the soul of Tod Masters. We pray this prayer in the precious and holy name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here is the Spanish translation:

Mateo 1:1-17

=======================================

ORACIONES A SAN PEREGRINO
