Matthew 14:22-36

Jesus made the disciples get into a boat
and precede him to the other side of the sea,
while he dismissed the crowds.
After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
When it was evening he was there alone.
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,
was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night,
he came toward them, walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.
“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter said to him in reply,
“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
He said, “Come.”
Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;
and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him,
and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,
“Truly, you are the Son of God.”

After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized him,
they sent word to all the surrounding country.
People brought to him all those who were sick
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak,
and as many as touched it were healed.

Today is the feast day of St. Dominic. Several years ago we held our seminarian retreat at a Dominican retreat house in Justice, IL. In the chapel of this retreat house they have a large, round stained-glass window behind the altar. And in the center of the window is a dog with a torch in its mouth.

When St. Dominic’s mother, Blessed Joan of Aza, was pregnant with Dominic, she had a dream in which she saw a dog running through a field with a torch in its mouth. The field of hay was very dry, so as the dog ran through the field, the torch lit the dry hay and the fire spread through the whole field.

It was a vision for what her son was going to do to the world with the Word of God – light it on fire! This was God’s will for Dominic’s life. He was to be that dog that runs through the field of life. There are so many people who don’t know God and are dried up spiritually. They thirst for God and don’t even know it. Dominic was to be a preacher (the Dominicans are known as the “Order of Preachers”; hence they have OP after their name). By preaching the word of God, he was to light the world on fire with the love of Jesus Christ.

You are I are called to light a fire on the earth as well. Jesus said, “I have come to light a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already blazing.” (Luke 12:49) Peter was once a simple fisherman. Jesus called him out of his comfort zone and even invited him to walk on water. Peter failed many times and denied Christ three times, yet Jesus founded the Church upon Peter, the rock. Peter encountered the long-awaited Messiah in Jesus of Nazareth and his life was never the same. He was so on fire with the love of Jesus that he was crucified upside down in Rome. Nothing was going to hold him back from preaching the Truth.

Do I know the Lord and His burning love for me?
Has my heart been lit on fire for Jesus?
Am I spreading this fire, or am I spreading other things (lies, rumors, gossip)?

Lord, help me to be your instrument of love to this world that is so hungry and thirsty for you. Give me the grace to know your love deep in my heart. Give me the desire to seek you above all things and to cling to only you. Then let your love shine through my smile, my words, my actions and my work. Help me to light this world on fire with your love!

St. Dominic, pray for us!

Spanish translation:

MATEO 14:22-36
Pero cuando vio que fuerte el viento era, él se atemorizo;
