Thought for Tuesday, 1st Week of Ordinary Time (January 9, 2018)

 

1 SAMUEL 1:9-20

Hannah rose after a meal at Shiloh,

and presented herself before the LORD;

at the time, Eli the priest was sitting on a chair

near the doorpost of the LORD’s temple.

In her bitterness she prayed to the LORD, weeping copiously,

and she made a vow, promising: “O LORD of hosts,

if you look with pity on the misery of your handmaid,

if you remember me and do not forget me,

if you give your handmaid a male child,

I will give him to the LORD for as long as he lives;

neither wine nor liquor shall he drink,

and no razor shall ever touch his head.”

As she remained long at prayer before the LORD,

Eli watched her mouth, for Hannah was praying silently;

though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard.

Eli, thinking her drunk, said to her,

“How long will you make a drunken show of yourself?

Sober up from your wine!”

“It isn’t that, my lord,” Hannah answered.

“I am an unhappy woman.

I have had neither wine nor liquor;

I was only pouring out my troubles to the LORD.

Do not think your handmaid a ne’er-do-well;

my prayer has been prompted by my deep sorrow and misery.”

Eli said, “Go in peace,

and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”

She replied, “Think kindly of your maidservant,” and left.

She went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband,

and no longer appeared downcast.

Early the next morning they worshiped before the LORD,

and then returned to their home in Ramah.

 

When Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah,

the LORD remembered her.

She conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son

whom she called Samuel, since she had asked the LORD for him.

January 9 – Matthew 10-12

 

As we return to Ordinary Time, we have this wonderful story from the first book of Samuel about Elkanah and his two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children but Hannah was childless. Elkanah was a faithful man who often took his family to the temple at Shiloh to worship God. He loved his wives but he seemed to have a special affection for Hannah. He tried to make her feel better about herself by telling her, “Why do you grieve? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” To make matters worse for Hannah, Peninnah would taunt Hannah for her lack of ability to bear children.

 

This is why we read that Hannah was crying out to God to “look with pity on the misery of your handmaid”. Hannah promised God that if He blessed her with a son, she would offer her son back to the Lord for “as long as he lives”. She was not going to be selfish with any gift God gave her. The Lord blessed Elkanah and Hannah with a son and they named him Samuel. And true to her word, Hannah brought her son, Samuel, whom she had waited for desperately, and gave him to Eli the priest to raise him.

 

Hannah and Elkanah are wonderful examples to us for a few reasons:

 

1) They loved each other deeply. Elkanah was very aware of the suffering of Hannah and he tried to console her. Am I sensitive to the feelings of the loved ones around me?

 

2) They regularly worshiped God. Studies show that a family that prays together at home and that worships together at church has a very low chance of divorce. Do I pray and worship outside of church?

 

3) They shared their deepest desires with God in prayer. Hannah poured out her heart to God. Eli thought that she was drunk because her lips moved but he heard no voice. Be real with God. Express your deepest desires with Him. Do not filter your prayer. You may think, “I cannot be angry with God.” God wants us to relate to Him everything that is going on in our hearts. Do I honestly share my thoughts, feelings and desires with the Lord?

 

4) They were generous with the gifts God gave them. I once heard a reflection from one of our seminarians about Epiphany. He shared that the magi had to lay down their gifts in order to hold the child Jesus. In other words, if we cling to our gifts, there is no room for Jesus in our arms and in our hearts. Am I generous with the gifts God has given me?

Hannah se levantó después de una comida en Silo,

y se presentó delante del Señor;

en ese momento, Elí el sacerdote estaba sentado en una silla

“Soy una mujer infeliz.

No he tenido ni vino ni licor;

Sólo estaba derramando mis problemas al Señor.

No creas que tu sierva es una cualquiera;

mi oración ha sido incitada por mi profunda tristeza y miseria”.

Eli dijo: “Ve en paz,

y que el Dios de Israel te conceda lo que le has pedido”.

Ella respondió: ” Piensa amablemente de tu sierva “, y se fue.

Ella se fue a su habitación, comió y bebió con su marido,

y ya no parecía abatida.

Temprano a la mañana siguiente adoraron delante del Señor,

y luego regresaron a su casa en Ramá.

Cuando Elcaná tenía relaciones con su esposa Hannah,

El Señor se acordó de ella.

Ella concibió, y al final de su plazo dio a luz un hijo

a quien ella llamó Samuel, ya que ella se lo había pedido al Señor.

Cómo regresamos al Tiempo Ordinario, hoy tenemos esta maravillosa historia del primer libro Samuel acerca de Elcaná y sus dos esposas, Hannah y Penina. Penina tenía hijos, pero Hannah no tenía hijos. Elcaná era un hombre fiel, que a menudo llevó a su familia al templo en Silo para adorar a Dios. Él amaba a sus esposas, pero parecía tener un afecto especial por Hannah. El trató de hacer que se sintiera mejor consigo misma diciéndole, “¿Por qué te afliges? ¿No soy yo para ti mejor que diez hijos? “Para empeorarle las cosas a Hannah, Penina se burlaba de Hannah por su falta de capacidad para tener hijos.

Es por eso que leemos que Hannah estaba clamando a Dios “mira con compasión la miseria de tu sierva”. Hannah le prometió a Dios que si Él la bendecía con un hijo, ella ofrecería a su hijo de vuelta al Señor por “todo el tiempo que viva.” Ella no iba a ser egoísta con ningún don que Dios le diera. El Señor bendijo a Elcaná y Hannah con un hijo y le pusieron por nombre Samuel. Y fiel a su palabra, Hannah llevó a su hijo, Samuel, a quien ella había esperado con desesperación, y se lo dio al sacerdote Elí para criarlo.

Ana y Elcaná son ejemplos maravillosos para nosotros por varias razones:

 

1) Ellos se amaban profundamente. Elcaná estaba muy consciente del sufrimiento de Hannah y trató de consolarla. ¿Soy sensible a los sentimientos de quienes amo a mi alrededor?

 

2) Ellos adoraban a Dios regularmente. Estudios muestran que la familia que oran juntos en casa y adoran juntos en la Iglesia tiene una baja probabilidad de divorcio. ¿Hago oración y alabo afuera de la iglesia?

 

3) Ellos compartieron sus deseos más profundos con Dios en la oración. Hannah derramó su corazón a Dios. Elí pensó que estaba borracha porque sus labios se movían, pero no escucho ninguna voz. Se real con Dios. Expresa tus deseos más profundos con Él. No filtres tu oración. Podrías pensar “No puedo estar enojado con Dios”. Dios quiere que nos relacionemos con El todo lo que está sucediendo en nuestros corazones. ¿De verdad comparto mis pensamientos, sentimientos y deseos con el Señor?

 

4) Ellos fueron generosos con los dones que Dios les dio. Una vez escuche una reflexión de uno de nuestros seminaristas sobe la Epifanía. Compartió que los magos habían traído sus ofrendas al Señor y tuvieron que dejar sus ofrendas a fin de sostener al niño Jesús. En otras palabras, si nos aferramos a nuestros dones, no hay lugar para Jesús en nuestros brazos y en nuestros corazones. ¿Soy generoso con los dones que Dios me ha dado?
