June 9, 2024 – 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus came home with his disciples.
Again the crowd gathered,
making it impossible for them even to eat.
When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him,
for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said,
“He is possessed by Beelzebul,”
and “By the prince of demons he drives out demons.”
Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables,
“How can Satan drive out Satan?
If a kingdom is divided against itself,
that kingdom cannot stand.
And if a house is divided against itself,
that house will not be able to stand.
And if Satan has risen up against himself
and is divided, he cannot stand;
that is the end of him.
But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property
unless he first ties up the strong man.
Then he can plunder the house.
Amen, I say to you,
all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be
forgiven them.
But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
will never have forgiveness,
but is guilty of an everlasting sin.”
For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
His mother and his brothers arrived.
Standing outside they sent word to him and called him.
A crowd seated around him told him,
“Your mother and your brothers and your sisters
are outside asking for you.”
But he said to them in reply,
“Who are my mother and my brothers?”
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother.”

This gospel passage has confused even Scripture scholars at times. His family says, “He is out of his mind.” The scribes say that he is possessed and driving out demons by Beelzebul.
Against these strong accusations, Jesus explains that a divided house can never stand. In fact, Jesus is part of a communion of persons in the Holy Trinity that can never be divided. He came to draw us into union with the Trinity and told us that with the power of the Holy Spirit, we would be able to do even greater things than Jesus did! Do you believe that this is possible?
What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that can never be forgiven? St. Augustine said that the unforgiveable sin is lasting impenitence unto death, meaning one never feels sorry for one’s sins. Others say it is a refusal of God’s mercy. Still others say it is working against the Holy Spirit in one’s life. Ironically, Jesus would later be accused of blasphemy, even though He is God.
Finally, Jesus is told that his mother, brothers and sisters are outside. He tells them that His family are those who hear the word of God and act upon it. Those who were challenging Jesus obviously were not open to His word, and therefore were separating themselves from His family.
The Holy Spirit is working in the lives of each one of us through our baptism. We are beloved children of God, and therefore heirs to the Kingdom. The Holy Spirit is within us and speaks to us constantly. When we spend quiet time in prayer listening to the voice of the Spirit, we learn how to hear His voice and respond. This is how we remain in the family, in communion with the Holy Trinity.
Do I believe the Holy Spirit can do greater things in and through me than Jesus did while on earth?

Marcos 3, 20-35
En aquel tiempo, Jesús entró en una casa con sus discípulos y acudió tanta gente, que no los dejaban ni comer. Al enterarse sus parientes, fueron a buscarlo, pues decían que se había vuelto loco.
Los escribas que habían venido de Jerusalén, decían acerca de Jesús: “Este hombre está poseído por Satanás, príncipe de los demonios, y por eso los echa fuera”.
Jesús llamó entonces a los escribas y les dijo en parábolas: “¿Cómo puede Satanás expulsar a Satanás? Porque si un reino está dividido en bandos opuestos, no puede subsistir. Una familia dividida tampoco puede subsistir. De la misma manera, si Satanás se rebela contra sí mismo y se divide, no podrá subsistir, pues ha llegado su fin. Nadie puede entrar en la casa de un hombre fuerte y llevarse sus cosas, si primero no lo ata. Sólo así podrá saquear la casa.
Yo les aseguro que a los hombres se les perdonarán todos sus pecados y todas sus blasfemias. Pero el que blasfeme contra el Espíritu Santo nunca tendrá perdón; será reo de un pecado eterno”. Jesús dijo esto, porque lo acusaban de estar poseído por un espíritu inmundo.
Llegaron entonces su madre y sus parientes; se quedaron fuera y lo mandaron llamar. En torno a él estaba sentada una multitud, cuando le dijeron: “Ahí fuera están tu madre y tus hermanos, que te buscan”.
Él les respondió: “¿Quién es mi madre y quiénes son mis hermanos?” Luego, mirando a los que estaban sentados a su alrededor, dijo: “Éstos son mi madre y mis hermanos. Porque el que cumple la voluntad de Dios, ése es mi hermano, mi hermana y mi madre”.

Este pasaje del evangelio ha confundido en ocasiones incluso a los eruditos de las Escrituras. Su familia dijo que se había vuelto loco. Los escribas dicen que está poseído por Beelzebul y que expulsa los demonios.
Contra estas fuertes acusaciones, Jesús explica que una casa dividida nunca podrá mantenerse en pie. De hecho, Jesús es parte de una comunión de personas en la Santísima Trinidad que nunca puede dividirse. Él vino para unirnos a la Trinidad y nos dijo que con el poder del Espíritu Santo, ¡podríamos hacer cosas aún mayores que las que hizo Jesús! ¿Crees que esto es posible?

San Agustín dijo que el pecado imperdonable es la impenitencia duradera hasta la muerte, lo que significa que uno nunca siente pena por sus pecados. Finalmente, le dicen a Jesús que su madre, sus hermanos y hermanas están afuera. Les dice que su familia son aquellos que escuchan la palabra de Dios y actúan en consecuencia. Aquellos que desafiaban a Jesús obviamente no estaban abiertos a Su palabra y, por lo tanto, se estaban separando de Su familia.
El Espíritu Santo está obrando en la vida de cada uno de nosotros a través de nuestro bautismo. Somos hijos amados de Dios y, por tanto, herederos del Reino. El Espíritu Santo está dentro de nosotros y nos habla constantemente. Cuando pasamos un tiempo tranquilo en oración escuchando la voz del Espíritu, aprendemos a escuchar Su voz y responder. Así permanecemos en familia, en comunión con la Santísima Trinidad.
¿Creo que el Espíritu Santo puede hacer cosas mayores en mí y a través de mí que las que Jesús hizo mientras estuvo en la tierra?
