Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
But store up treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
“The lamp of the body is the eye.
If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;
but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness.
And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”

St. Aloysius Gonzaga was born into a noble family in Mantua, Italy. Although he could have lived a very comfortable, he was inspired by the sacrifices made by the Jesuit missionaries in India. His father wanted him to be a military hero, but Aloysius felt the call from God to renounce all material things and offer his life in prayer and sacrifice. The more he experienced the life of nobility, the more he wanted to give it all up. He began studying for the priesthood with the Jesuits in Rome and the plague arrived in Europe. As he cared for the sick, Aloysius caught the disease and died at the age of 23. He is the patron saint of teenagers and seminarians.
Take time today to reflect on this beautiful, yet challenging text from the Lord. Where is my treasure? Where do I spend my time? On what do I spend my money? On what or whom do I focus when I wake up in the morning and before I fall asleep? Where do I focus my energy? Do I focus on things that are earthly or on the things of heaven?
Money and material things are not good or bad in and of themselves. Focusing my time and energy on earthly things is of limited value as they will all decay and be destroyed. If I focus on my relationships with God and neighbor, my efforts are of ultimate value as their fruits are eternal.
Jesus is trying to keep us focused on the things that will last forever because that is how we are made. We are made for relationships, love, heaven, joy, and peace. We cannot take any material things with us when we die. The only title we can take with us is “child of God.” God is not worried about how much money is in your bank account, how high you have climbed the corporate ladder, or how lofty your title is. But He might ask us, “How much did you love? What did you do with the gifts I gave you?”
Then the Lord teaches us about light and darkness. “The lamp of the body is the eye.” When I meet people, who are holy and living in God’s grace, their eyes shine with a light that does not come from this world. I know from experience that when I have not been in God’s grace, I have not been able to look others in the eye because I am afraid, they will see into my soul.
What am I allowing into my soul through my eyes and other senses? What am I viewing on TV or the internet? What am I reading? What is the focus of my conversations? If I fill myself with things of the light, the things of Jesus, my whole body will be filled with light. Others will be drawn to the Holy Spirit who lives in me. However, if I fill myself with darkness, “how great the darkness will be.” Do I want to attract others to the Light or lead others into darkness?
If you find yourself in darkness and focusing on things that are not of the light, the Lord is inviting you to refocus your life today. He constantly calls us back to Him, to a life of abundant joy, to a life of love and service. Maybe a good confession is what you need. As Pope Francis said recently, the tragedy is not that we fall. The tragedy is that we stay down and do not return to the Lord. If you return to the Lord with a contrite heart and humble spirit, there is no limit to the mercy of God. In fact, He tells us there is joy in heaven when a sinner returns to Him and repents from his/her sin.
When we choose sin, we choose misery and darkness. But when we choose virtue, we choose light and joy. So choose light! Choose joy!

Más bien acumulen tesoros en el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni el moho los destruyen, ni hay ladrones que perforen las paredes y se los roben; porque donde está tu tesoro, ahí también está tu corazón.
Tus ojos son la luz de tu cuerpo; de manera que, si tus ojos están sanos, todo tu cuerpo tendrá luz. Pero si tus ojos están enfermos, todo tu cuerpo tendrá oscuridad. Y si lo que en ti debería ser luz, no es más que oscuridad, ¡qué negra no será tu propia oscuridad!”

St. Luis Gonzaga nació en una familia noble en Mantua, Italia. Aunque pudo haber vivido una vida muy cómoda, se inspiró en los sacrificios realizados por los misioneros jesuitas en la India. Su padre quería que fuera un héroe militar, pero Luis sintió el llamado de Dios a renunciar a todas las cosas materiales y ofrecer su vida en oración y sacrificio. Cuanto más experimentaba la vida de la nobleza, más quería dejarlo todo. Comenzó a estudiar para el sacerdocio con los jesuitas en Roma y la peste llegó a Europa. Mientras cuidaba a los enfermos, Luis contrajo la enfermedad y murió a la edad de 23 años. Es el santo patrón de los adolescentes y seminaristas.
Tómese el tiempo hoy para reflexionar sobre este hermoso, pero desafiante texto del Señor. ¿Dónde está mi tesoro? ¿Dónde paso mi tiempo? ¿En qué gasto mi dinero? ¿En qué o en quién me enfoco cuando me levanto por la mañana y antes de dormirme? ¿Dónde enfoco mi energía? ¿Me enfoco en las cosas que son terrenales o en las cosas del cielo?
El dinero y las cosas materiales no son buenas ni malas en sí mismas. Si enfoco mi tiempo y energía en las cosas de esta tierra, todo se deteriorará y será destruido. Si me enfoco en mis relaciones con Dios y con el prójimo, estas cosas son eternas.
Jesús está tratando de mantenernos enfocados en las cosas que duraran para siempre, porque así es como estamos hechos. Estamos hechos para las relaciones, el amor, el cielo, la alegría y la paz. No podemos llevarnos con nosotros nada material cuando morimos. El único título que podemos llevarnos con nosotros es “hijo de Dios”. Dios no está preocupado por cuánto dinero hay en su cuenta bancaria, qué tan alto ha ascendido en la escala corporativa o cuán alto es su título. Pero Él podría preguntarnos, “¿Cuánto amaste? ¿Qué hiciste con los dones que te di?”
Luego el Señor nos enseña sobre la luz y la oscuridad. “Tus ojos son la luz de tu cuerpo.” Cuando me encuentro con personas que son santas y que viven en la gracia de Dios, sus ojos brillan con una luz que no viene de este mundo. Yo sé por experiencia que cuando no he estado en la gracia de Dios, no he podido ver a otros a los ojos porque temo que verán mi alma.
¿Qué estoy dejando que entre en mi alma a través de mis ojos y otros sentidos? ¿Qué estoy viendo en la televisión o Internet? ¿Qué estoy leyendo? ¿Cuál es el enfoque de mis conversaciones? Si yo me lleno de cosas de la luz, las cosas de Jesús, todo mi cuerpo estará lleno de luz. Otros serán atraídos por el Espíritu Santo que vive en mí. Sin embargo, si me lleno de oscuridad, “cuán grandiosa será la oscuridad”. ¿Quiero atraer a otros a la Luz o guiar a otros a la oscuridad?
Si te encuentras en la oscuridad y enfocándote en cosas que no son de la luz, el Señor hoy te invita a reenfocar tu vida. Él constantemente nos llama a que volvamos a Él, a una vida de abundante alegría, a una vida de amor y servicio. Tal vez una buena confesión es lo que necesitas. Como dijo recientemente el Papa Francisco, la tragedia no es que caemos. La tragedia es que nos quedamos abajo y no volvemos al Señor. Si regresas al Señor con un corazón contrito y un espíritu humilde, no hay límite para la misericordia de Dios. De hecho, Él nos dice que hay gozo en el cielo cuando un pecador regresa a Él y se arrepiente de su pecado.
Cuando elegimos el pecado, elegimos la miseria y la oscuridad. Pero cuando elegimos la virtud, elegimos la luz y la alegría. ¡Así que elige la luz! ¡Elige la alegría!
