June 23, 2024 – 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time
On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples:
“Let us cross to the other side.”
Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was.
And other boats were with him.
A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat,
so that it was already filling up.
Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion.
They woke him and said to him,
“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
He woke up,
rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!”
The wind ceased and there was great calm.
Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified?
Do you not yet have faith?”
They were filled with great awe and said to one another,
“Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”

In 1633, Rembrandt painted a beautiful masterpiece of today’s Gospel entitled “Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee”. It portrays about five of the disciples far away from Jesus in the boat trying to fight the waves by themselves. These disciples symbolize how we rely on ourselves to fight the battles of life.
There is another disciple near Jesus, but with his back to the Lord, hanging over the edge of the boat as if he is seasick. It is never good to have our back to the Lord. When we take our focus off Jesus and focus on the storms, it can cause physical and spiritual sickness.
The other disciples are near Jesus, and they seem calm amid the storm. This is a great message for us to contemplate. Jesus wants us to stay close to Him always. He says to us, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”
Imagine the different journeys that Jesus has invited you to take. He calls you to do many things in your lifetime, often things that you never thought were possible. Jesus never sends you on a journey by yourself; He is always with you.
Jesus invited the disciples to “cross to the other side”. This is symbolic of any journey that He invites us to make. With any journey, there are risks. Along the journey a “violent squall came up”, just like the many trials and tribulations that come our way along life’s journey. Where was Jesus? He was asleep in the back of the boat. It is important to note that even though Jesus was with them, several were very much afraid. They felt alone and panicked.
Of course, Jesus calmed the storm with His words, “Quiet! Be Still!” When the Word of God speaks, even the winds and the waves obey. The Lord is with us on every journey, even when we don’t sense His presence. He will never abandon us, especially on journeys that He has invited us to undertake. He invites us to trust Him completely and never panic or feel alone. His words can calm any storm.
Is there a situation in your life that causes fear and anxiety?
Do you trust that the Lord is in your “boat” with you?
Do you find your security by relying on God, or do you turn to ungodly self-reliance?
Lord, increase my faith. When I am afraid, help me to trust in You. I know that You can calm the storms around me. Sometimes instead of calming the storm, You hold me close until the storm passes. I pray to remain always in your loving embrace. Let me never turn my back on You or distrust You. Help me to rely on You, for Your grace and love are abundant.

Marcos 4, 35-41
Un día, al atardecer, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Vamos a la otra orilla del lago”. Entonces los discípulos despidieron a la gente y condujeron a Jesús en la misma barca en que estaba. Iban además otras barcas. De pronto se desató un fuerte viento y las olas se estrellaban contra la barca y la iban llenando de agua. Jesús dormía en la popa, reclinado sobre un cojín. Lo despertaron y le dijeron: “Maestro, ¿no te importa que nos hundamos?” Él se despertó, reprendió al viento y dijo al mar: “¡Cállate, enmudece!” Entonces el viento cesó y sobrevino una gran calma. Jesús les dijo: “¿Por qué tenían tanto miedo? ¿Aún no tienen fe?” Todos se quedaron espantados y se decían unos a otros: “¿Quién es éste, a quien hasta el viento y el mar obedecen?”

Los otros discípulos están cerca de Jesús y parecen tranquilos en medio de la tormenta. Este es un gran mensaje para que lo contemplemos. Jesús quiere que permanezcamos cerca de Él siempre. Él nos dice: “¿Por qué tenían tanto miedo? ¿Aún no tienen fe?”
Imagina los diferentes viajes que Jesús te ha invitado a tomar. Él te llama a hacer muchas cosas en tu vida, a menudo cosas que nunca pensaste que eran posibles. Jesús nunca te envía en un viaje por ti mismo; Él siempre está contigo.
Jesús invitó a los discípulos, “Vamos a la otra orilla del lago”. Esto es simbólico de cualquier viaje que Él nos invite a hacer. Con cualquier viaje, hay riesgos. A lo largo del viaje surgió “un fuerte viento”, al igual que las muchas pruebas y tribulaciones que vienen a nuestro camino a lo largo del viaje de la vida. ¿Dónde estaba Jesús? Estaba dormido en la parte trasera del barco. Es importante tener en cuenta que a pesar de que Jesús estaba con ellos, varios tenían mucho miedo. Se sentían solos y presas del pánico.
Por supuesto, Jesús calmó la tormenta con Sus palabras, “¡Cállate, enmudece!” Cuando la Palabra de Dios habla, incluso los vientos y las olas obedecen. El Señor está con nosotros en cada viaje, incluso cuando no sentimos Su presencia. Él nunca nos abandonará, especialmente en los viajes que Él nos ha invitado a emprender. Él nos invita a confiar en Él completamente y nunca entrar en pánico o sentirnos solos. Sus palabras pueden calmar cualquier tormenta.
¿Hay alguna situación en tu vida que cause miedo y ansiedad?
¿Confías en que el Señor está en tu “barca” contigo?
¿Encuentras tu seguridad confiando en Dios, o recurres a la autosuficiencia impía?
Señor aumenta mi fe. Cuando tenga miedo, ayúdame a confiar en Ti. Sé que Tú puedes calmar las tormentas a mi alrededor. A veces, en lugar de calmar la tormenta, me mantienes cerca hasta que pase la tormenta. Oro para que permanezcan siempre en su abrazo amoroso. Déjame nunca dar la espalda a Ti o desconfiar de Ti. Ayúdame a confiar en Ti, porque Tu gracia y amor son abundantes.
