Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine,
lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces.
“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.
This is the Law and the Prophets.
“Enter through the narrow gate;
for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction,
and those who enter through it are many.
How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life.
And those who find it are few.”

Jesus tells the disciples, “Do not give what is holy to dogs.…” As I was praying with this, the thought came to me that we often give our body and soul away to what is not holy. The day we were baptized, God the Father laid a claim to us. “You are mine. You are my beloved daughter/son.” We are called to be holy, which means to be “set apart”. Do we treat our bodies and our souls as sacred and holy?
When we are on a healthy diet, we carefully count our calories and watch everything that we ingest. We need to take care of our bodies by eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising. At the same time, we should protect our souls as our prized possessions, as sacred, as set apart for God alone. We should guard what we watch on TV, what we listen to, what we read, what we discuss with friends. We should protect ourselves from things on the internet that will draw us away from purity. Everything that we think, say and do should give honor and glory to God.
As parents, what are we allowing into our homes through the TV, internet, and smart phones? Do I know what my children are viewing on their phones and other devices in their rooms? There is a spiritual battle going on for the souls of our young people.
The Holy Spirit lives deep within each one of us. The Kingdom of God, the pearl of great price is at our core. Don’t let anyone trample it underfoot or tear it to pieces, as Jesus says. Care for your soul as if your life depended on it.
What is your greatest treasure in life? Some people guard their 401K or their retirement plan with their lives. What do you do to protect and nurture your eternal soul? Our finances and material possessions are left behind when we die, but our soul lives forever. Do you protect and care for your relationship with God in the same way that you do your material possessions? Do you protect your body and soul from everything that comes to rob them of their dignity?
Jesus warns us that the “gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction.” The spiritual battle is real, and the evil one is trying to lull us to sleep, desensitizing us to the temptations he sets before us. Jesus was trying to wake up His followers to this spiritual reality and His words need to be heard today. Enter the narrow gate that leads to everlasting life. Guard your relationship with the Lord as sacred. “Be vigilant. The evil one is prowling like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
As an athlete, I learned to work hard and persevere through difficult times. Just as I invested time in practice to become the best baseball player I could, we are called to invest time in prayer, Scripture and the Sacraments to become the saints God has called us to be. I watched “The Last Dance”, the ESPN special on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Michael Jordan did all that he could to become the best basketball player in the world. He worked harder than anyone else and became the best. What am I doing to become the best version of myself? The gate is narrow that leads to life, but it is worth our time, blood, sweat and tears. You will never regret investing in your spiritual life. You will regret giving what is holy (your body and soul) to the dogs.
Do I treat my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit?
Do I protect my soul from anything that leads me away from God?
Do I have the desire to be a saint?

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “No den a los perros las cosas santas ni echen sus perlas a los cerdos, no sea que las pisoteen y después se vuelvan contra ustedes y los despedacen.
Traten a los demás como quieren que ellos los traten a ustedes. En esto se resumen la ley y los profetas.
Entren por la puerta estrecha; porque ancha es la puerta y amplio el camino que conduce a la perdición, y son muchos los que entran por él. Pero ¡qué estrecha es la puerta y qué angosto el camino que conduce a la vida, y qué pocos son los que lo encuentran!”

Jesús dice a los discípulos: “No den a los perros las cosas santas…” Mientras oraba con esto, el pensamiento me vino que a menudo damos nuestro cuerpo y alma a lo que no es santo. El día que fuimos bautizados, Dios el Padre nos puso una reclamación. “Tú eres mío. Tú eres mi hija/ hijo amado.” Estamos llamados a ser santos, que significa ser “apartado”. ¿Tratamos a nuestros cuerpos y nuestras almas como sagrado y santo?
Cuando estamos en una dieta saludable, contamos cuidadosamente nuestras calorías y observamos todo lo que ingerimos. Tenemos que cuidar nuestros cuerpos comiendo bien, durmiendo lo suficiente y haciendo ejercicio. Al mismo tiempo, debemos proteger nuestras almas como nuestras posesiones preciadas, sagradas, y apartadas sólo para Dios. Debemos guardar lo que vemos en la televisión, lo que escuchamos, lo que leemos, lo que discutimos con los amigos. Debemos protegernos de las cosas en el Internet que nos alejarán de la pureza. Todo lo que pensamos, decimos y hacemos debe dar honor y gloria a Dios.
Como padres, ¿qué estamos permitiendo entrar en nuestros hogares a través de la televisión, Internet, teléfonos inteligentes, etc.? ¿Sé lo que mis hijos están viendo en sus teléfonos y en otros dispositivos en sus cuartos? Hay una batalla espiritual para las almas de nuestros jóvenes.
El Espíritu Santo vive en lo profundo de cada uno de nosotros. El Reino de Dios, la perla de gran precio está en nuestro núcleo. No dejes que nadie la pisotee o la rompa en pedazos, como dice Jesús. Cuida de tu alma como si tu vida dependiera de ella.
¿Cuál es tu mayor tesoro en la vida? Algunas personas guardan su 401K o su plan de retiro con sus vidas. ¿Qué haces para proteger y nutrir tu alma eterna? Nuestras finanzas y posesiones materiales se quedan atrás cuando morimos, pero nuestra alma vive para siempre. ¿Proteges, cuidas y nutres tu relación con Dios de la misma manera? ¿Proteges tu cuerpo y alma de todo lo que viene a robarles su dignidad?
Jesús nos advierte que “la puerta es ancha y el camino ancho conducen a la destrucción”. La batalla espiritual es real y el maligno está tratando de adormecernos para dormir, desensibilizándonos a las tentaciones que él pone en frente de nosotros. Jesús estaba tratando de despertar a sus seguidores a esta realidad espiritual y sus palabras deben ser escuchadas hoy. Entra por la puerta estrecha que lleva a la vida eterna. Protege tu relación con el Señor como algo sagrado. Guarda tu relación con el Señor como sagrada. Estén atentos y vigilantes que el maligno está “rondando como un león rugiente, buscando a quien devorar.” (1 Pedro 5: 8)
Como atleta, aprendí a trabajar duro y perseverar en los momentos difíciles. Así como invertí tiempo en la práctica para convertirme en el mejor jugador de béisbol que pude, estamos llamados a invertir tiempo en oración, Escritura y los Sacramentos para llegar a ser los santos que Dios nos ha llamado a ser. Vi a “The Last Dance” (“El Ultimo Baile), el especial de ESPN sobre Michael Jordan y los Chicago Bulls. Michael Jordan hizo todo lo que pudo para convertirse en el mejor jugador de basket en el mundo. Trabajó más duro que nadie y se convirtió en el mejor. ¿Qué estoy haciendo para convertirme en la mejor versión de mí mismo? La puerta es estrecha que conduce a la vida, pero vale la pena nuestro tiempo, sangre, sudor y lágrimas. Nunca te arrepentirás de haber invertido en tu vida espiritual. Te arrepentirás de dar lo que es santo (tu cuerpo y alma) a los perros.
¿Trato a mi cuerpo como un templo del Espíritu Santo?
¿Protejo mi alma de cualquier cosa que me aleje de Dios?
¿Tengo el deseo de ser un santo?
