May 16, 2024 – Thursday of the 7th Week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 22:30; 23:6-11


Wishing to determine the truth
about why Paul was being accused by the Jews,
the commander freed him
and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to convene.
Then he brought Paul down and made him stand before them.

Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some Pharisees,
so he called out before the Sanhedrin,
“My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees;
I am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the dead.”
When he said this,
a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees,
and the group became divided.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection
or angels or spirits,
while the Pharisees acknowledge all three.
A great uproar occurred,
and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party
stood up and sharply argued,
“We find nothing wrong with this man.
Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
The dispute was so serious that the commander,
afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them,
ordered his troops to go down and rescue Paul from their midst
and take him into the compound.
The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage.
For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem,
so you must also bear witness in Rome.”

Today we have the story of St. Paul facing the Sanhedrin, which was made up of Pharisees (who believed in the resurrection) and Sadducees (who did not believe in the resurrection). With wisdom from the Holy Spirit, Paul shared with the members of the Sanhedrin that he was a Pharisee, which would garner the favor of the Pharisees. He also shared that he was on trial for his “hope in the resurrection from the dead”. This would take the focus off him, highlighting the difference between the groups. As expected, the Pharisees spoke in favor of Paul and then a great dispute broke out.

The argument was so fierce they thought that Paul would be physically torn apart. The commander rescued Paul and had him taken to the compound. The following night, the Lord spoke to Paul, “Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.” The Lord was guiding Paul and assuring him of His constant presence and inspiration. Paul allowed the Holy Spirit to guide his every move.

In 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 Paul says, “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”


Do I pray for the Holy Spirit to inspire my words and actions in every circumstance?

Do I feel compelled by Christ’s love to share my faith with others?

Do I trust the Lord enough to risk my life for Him?

St. Paul pray for us, that we may receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit as we prepare for Pentecost Sunday. May our hearts, like yours, catch fire for the love of Christ. May we have a new ardor to share the joy of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Deseando para determinar la verdad

se pusieron de pie y fuertemente argumentando,
“No encontramos nada malo en este hombre.
Supongamos que un espíritu o un ángel le ha hablado? “
La disputa fue tan grave que el comandante,
con miedo de que Pablo fuese despedazado por ellos,
ordenó a sus tropas para ir y rescatar a Pablo de en medio
y llevarlo al recinto.
La noche siguiente el Señor estuvo a su lado y le dijo, “Ánimo.
Porque como has dado testimonio de mi causa en Jerusalén,
por lo que también debes dar testimonio en Roma”.

Hoy tenemos la historia de San Pablo frente al Sanedrín, que estaba compuesta por fariseos (que creían en la resurrección) y saduceos (que no creían en la resurrección). Con la sabiduría del Espíritu Santo, Pablo compartió con los miembros del Sanedrín que era un fariseo, lo que se ganaría el favor de los fariseos. También compartió que estaba siendo juzgado por su “esperanza en la resurrección de los muertos”. Esto quitaría el foco de él, destacando la diferencia entre los grupos. ¿Rezo para que el Espíritu Santo inspire mis palabras y acciones en todas las circunstancias?

¿Me siento obligado por el amor de Cristo a compartir mi fe con los demás?

¿Confío lo suficiente en el Señor como para arriesgar mi vida por él?

San Pablo, ruega por nosotros, para que podamos recibir la efusión del Espíritu Santo mientras nos preparamos para el Domingo de Pentecostés. Que nuestros corazones, como el suyo, prendan fuego por el amor de Cristo. Que tengamos un nuevo ardor para compartir la alegría de la resurrección de Jesucristo de entre los muertos.
