Beloved:
Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from?
Is it not from your passions that make war within your members?
You covet but do not possess.
You kill and envy but you cannot obtain;
you fight and wage war.
You do not possess because you do not ask.
You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly,
to spend it on your passions.
Adulterers!
Do you not know that to be a lover of the world means enmity with God?
Therefore, whoever wants to be a lover of the world
makes himself an enemy of God.
Or do you suppose that the Scripture speaks without meaning when it says,
The spirit that he has made to dwell in us tends toward jealousy?
But he bestows a greater grace; therefore, it says:
God resists the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.
So submit yourselves to God.
Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners,
and purify your hearts, you of two minds.
Begin to lament, to mourn, to weep.
Let your laughter be turned into mourning
and your joy into dejection.
Humble yourselves before the Lord
and he will exalt you.

Today the Church remembers St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions, who were priests and laymen who preached and taught the faith in Mexico during the Cristeros period. The government in Mexico persecuted the Church while abducting, torturing and killing these martyrs between 1915 and 1937.
Do you ever feel like you have a war going on within you? It reminds me of St. Paul who said, “What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.” (Romans 7:15) St. James says something similar today, “Is it not from your passions that make war within your members?” I know I have felt this way many times. I want to follow the Lord every moment of my life, and yet in my human weakness, I am sometimes drawn to focus on the things of this earth, and I take my attention off Christ.
St. Augustine said, “Lord, we were made for you and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” Even though our hearts are constantly seeking God, we search for the fulfillment only God can provide, in the wrong places. We try to fill that infinite void in our hearts with finite things; people, food, drugs, alcohol, sex and material things. Quietly God awaits us. His arms are open wide for us to go to Him, for He alone can satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Like the father in the prodigal son story (Luke 15), God the Father runs to us as soon as we turn back to Him.
St. James calls us “adulterers” because when we love the world, we are cheating on God. Wow! Take time to think about that…. Our primary love should be for God. Whenever we place someone or something in the place of God in our hearts, we are committing adultery. “To be a lover of the world means enmity with God.”
Have I cheated on God by loving the things of this world more than Him? This is not meant to make us feel guilt or shame. It is an invitation to the fullness of life that can only come with God at the center of everything.
To what or whom do I turn when I am lonely, when my heart is searching? When we are hungry, our stomach tells us to eat. When we are lonely, our soul is telling us that it is hungry for God. Archbishop Sartain once said, “Loneliness is God’s invitation to intimacy with Him.” Paying attention to what or whom we turn when we are lonely is key in the spiritual journey. Try praying the next time you feel lonely and see if God satisfies your deepest desires.
St. James tells us to “resist the devil…draw near to God…cleanse your hands…and purify your hearts.” This is good advice for each one of us to stop and reflect on our lives. Acknowledge the war that is going on inside us. Sin leads us to misery and separates us from God. A close relationship with the Holy Spirit leads to a life of peace, joy and love.
True joy and peace come from making Jesus the absolute center of our lives. In the Gospel today, the disciples were discussing who was the greatest among them. Even when they lived with Jesus, they took their eyes off Him. The Lord calls us to cleanse our hands and purify our hearts today so that there is room for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Turn away from sin and turn towards God. He will come running to you.

Hermanos míos: ¿De dónde vienen las luchas y los conflictos entre ustedes? ¿No es, acaso, de las malas pasiones, que siempre están en guerra dentro de ustedes? Ustedes codician lo que no pueden tener y acaban asesinando. Ambicionan algo que no pueden alcanzar, y entonces combaten y hacen la guerra. Y si no lo alcanzan, es porque no se lo piden a Dios. O si se lo piden y no lo reciben, es porque piden mal, para derrocharlo en placeres.
Gente infiel, ¿no saben que la amistad con el mundo es enemistad con Dios? Por lo tanto, quien decide ser amigo del mundo se hace enemigo de Dios. No piensen que la Escritura dice en vano: Dios ama celosamente a nuestro espíritu y nos da su gracia con generosidad. Por eso dice también la Escritura: Dios aborrece a los soberbios y concede su gracia a los humildes.
Por consiguiente, sométanse a Dios; resistan al diablo y se alejará de ustedes. Acérquense a Dios y él se acercará a ustedes. Que los pecadores se purifiquen las manos y se decidan por Dios los indecisos. Comiencen ya a lamentar y a llorar su miseria. Que su risa se convierta en llanto y su alegría en tristeza. Humíllense ante el Señor y él los enaltecerá.

Hoy la Iglesia recuerda a San Cristóbal Magallanes y Compañeros, quienes fueron sacerdotes y laicos que predicaron y enseñaron la fe en México durante la época de los Cristeros. El gobierno de México persiguió a la Iglesia mientras secuestraba, torturaba y asesinaba a estos mártires entre 1915 y 1937.
¿Alguna vez sientes como si tuvieras una guerra dentro de ti? Me recuerda a San Pablo, quien dijo: “Que yo hago, no entiendo. Porque yo no hago lo que quiero, sino que hago lo que odio.” (Romanos 7,15) Santiago dice algo similar hoy, “¿No es, acaso, de las malas pasiones, que siempre están en guerra dentro de ustedes?” Yo sé que me he sentido así muchas veces. Quiero seguir al Señor cada momento de mi vida, y, sin embargo, en mi debilidad humana, a veces me siento atraído por centrarme en las cosas de esta tierra y retiro mi atención de Cristo.
San Agustín dijo: “Señor, fuimos hechos para ti y nuestros corazones están inquietos hasta que descansen en ti.” Aunque nuestros corazones buscan constantemente a Dios, buscamos la realización que sólo Dios puede proporcionar, en los lugares equivocados. Tratamos de llenar ese vacío infinito en nuestros corazones con cosas finitas; personas, comida, drogas, alcohol, sexo y cosas materiales. Dios nos espera en silencio. Sus brazos están abiertos para que vayamos a Él, porque sólo Él puede satisfacer los anhelos más profundos de nuestros corazones. Al igual que el padre en la historia del hijo pródigo (Lucas 15), Dios el Padre corre hacia nosotros tan pronto cuando volvemos a Él.
Santiago nos llama “adúlteros” porque cuando amamos al mundo, estamos engañando a Dios. ¡Guau! Tómese el tiempo para pensar en eso… Nuestro amor primario debe ser por Dios. Cada vez que colocamos a alguien o algo en el lugar de Dios en nuestros corazones, estamos cometiendo adulterio. “No saben que la amistad con el mundo es enemistad con Dios.”
¿He engañado a Dios amando las cosas de este mundo más que a Él? Esto no pretende hacernos sentir culpables o avergonzados. Es una invitación a la plenitud de la vida que sólo puede venir con Dios en el centro de todo.
¿A qué o a quién recurro cuando estoy solo, cuando mi corazón está buscando? Cuando tenemos hambre nuestro estómago nos dice que comamos. Cuando estamos solos nuestra alma está hambrienta de Dios. El Arzobispo Sartain una vez dijo, “La soledad es la invitación de Dios a la intimidad con Él.” Prestar atención a qué o a quién recurrimos cuando estamos solos es clave en el viaje espiritual. Trate de orar la próxima vez que se sienta solo y vea si Dios satisface sus deseos más profundos.
Santiago nos dice “resístanse al diablo…acérquense a Dios …limpien sus manos…y purifiquen sus corazones.” Este es un buen consejo para que cada uno de nosotros se detenga y reflexione sobre nuestras vidas. Reconoce la guerra que está pasando dentro de nosotros. El pecado nos lleva a la miseria y nos separa de Dios. Una relación cercana con el Espíritu Santo conduce a una vida de paz, alegría y amor.
La verdadera alegría y paz viene al hacer a Jesús el centro absoluto de nuestras vidas. En el Evangelio de hoy, los discípulos discutían quién era el más grande entre ellos. Incluso cuando vivieron con Jesús, quitaron sus ojos de Él. El Señor nos llama a limpiar nuestras manos y purificar nuestros corazones hoy para que haya espacio para que el Espíritu Santo obre en nuestras vidas. Aléjate del pecado y vuelven hacia Dios. Vendrá corriendo hacia ti.
