May 28, 2024 – Tuesday of the 8th Week of Ordinary Time
Mark 10:28-31
Peter began to say to Jesus,
‘We have given up everything and followed you.”
Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you,
there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands
for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel
who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:
houses and brothers and sisters
and mothers and children and lands,
with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.
But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

I remember having a conversation with God the night before my ordination. I told Him, “I’ve given up everything that I value to follow you – wife, children, baseball, and money to follow you.” Although I did not use these words, I was wondering, “What is in it for me?”
This sounds like what Peter was thinking in this Gospel passage. He had given up so much to follow Jesus, and he wanted to know what he would receive in return. Jesus responded by telling him that he who sacrifices much in this life will be rewarded a hundredfold NOW and receive eternal life FOREVER! Wow! That is an amazing promise!
I have served as a priest for almost 22 years, and they have been the most incredible years of my life. I thought being a priest meant being lonely, bored, and poor. I have found the opposite to be true. I think every human being is looking for intimacy, which means meeting another person at the deepest level of the heart. Although I have experienced some loneliness, which everyone does, my life is full of intimacy with amazing people. I have never been bored in 22 years! Even though I don’t make much money, I feel like I am the richest man in the world when it comes to God’s grace and blessings. The Lord truly has blessed my life “a hundred times more in this present age.”
Not only has God shown me the beauty of serving His people as a priest, but since 2013, I have served in in the major leagues as the Catholic Chaplain with the Chicago Cubs. I thought I had given up baseball, but God has brought it back to me in surprising ways. I continue in this role as chaplain, and I have a few priests to help me in this ministry.
The Lord always keeps His promises. When we truly make sacrifices to follow Him, He will bless us. These blessings may not come in the way we expect, but they will be abundant. We must not look past the two words that Jesus proclaims – “with persecutions”. Following Jesus does not mean that every worry will be taken away and that we will never suffer. Jesus never promised that. In fact, He tells us that to follow Him we must pick up our cross daily. We should not be surprised by crosses and suffering when we follow Jesus. I have endured the death of both of my dear parents since I entered seminary in 1997. Despite some very heavy crosses, I still feel blessed beyond belief.
Have you offered back to God all the gifts and talents He has given you?
Have you sacrificed anything to follow Jesus?
Have you experienced trials while following the Lord?
What are the blessings you have experienced since you said “yes” to follow Jesus?
Let us not count the costs to follow Jesus because He will carry us through any trial or suffering, and He will also give us peace and joy that we never experienced from things of this world. It is impossible to outdo God in generosity, but I dare you to try.

En aquel tiempo, Pedro le dijo a Jesús: “Señor, ya ves que nosotros lo hemos dejado todo para seguirte”.
Jesús le respondió: “Yo les aseguro: Nadie que haya dejado casa, o hermanos o hermanas, o padre o madre, o hijos o tierras, por mí y por el Evangelio, dejará de recibir, en esta vida, el ciento por uno en casas, hermanos y hermanas, madres e hijos y tierras, junto con persecuciones, y en el otro mundo, la vida eterna. Y muchos que ahora son los primeros serán los últimos, y muchos que ahora son los últimos, serán los primeros”.

Recuerdo haber tenido una conversación con Dios la noche antes de mi ordenación. Le dije, “He renunciado a todo lo que valoro para seguirte – esposa, hijos, béisbol, y dinero para seguirte.” Aunque yo no utilice estas palabras, me preguntaba: “¿Qué hay para mí? “
Esto suena como lo que Pedro estaba pensando en este pasaje del Evangelio. Había renunciado a tanto para seguir a Jesús, y yo quería saber lo que obtendría a cambio. ¡Jesús respondió diciéndole que el que sacrifica mucho en esta vida será recompensado cien veces más AHORA y recibirá la vida eterna PARA SIEMPRE! ¡Guau! ¡Esa es una promesa increíble!
He servido como sacerdote durante casi 22 años y han sido los años más increíbles de mi vida. Pensé que ser sacerdote significaba estar solo, aburrido y pobre. He encontrado que es lo contrario. Creo que cada ser humano está buscando intimidad, lo que significa encontrarse con otra persona en el nivel más profundo del corazón. Aunque he experimentado algo de soledad, lo que todos les pasa, mi vida está llena de intimidad con personas increíbles. ¡Nunca me he aburrido en 22 años! Aunque no gano mucho dinero, siento que soy el hombre más rico del mundo cuando se trata de la gracia y las bendiciones de Dios. El Señor verdaderamente ha bendecido mi vida “cien veces más en esta vida presente”.
Dios no solo me ha mostrado la belleza de servir a su pueblo como sacerdote, sino que también puedo hacerlo en las ligas mayores con los Cachorros de Chicago como su capellán católico desde 2013. Pensé que había renunciado al béisbol, pero Dios me lo trajo de nuevo de maneras sorprendentes. Continuaré en este papel como capellán, probablemente encontrando algunos sacerdotes que me ayuden en este ministerio.
El Señor siempre cumple Sus promesas. Cuando hagamos sacrificios para seguirlo, Él nos bendecirá. Estas bendiciones pueden no venir de la manera que esperamos, pero serán abundantes. No debemos mirar más allá de las dos palabras que Jesús proclama: “con persecuciones”. El seguir a Jesús no significa que toda preocupación se nos quitara y que nunca sufriremos. Jesús nunca nos prometió eso. De hecho, Él nos dice que para seguirlo debemos cargar nuestra Cruz diariamente. No debemos ser sorprendidos por las cruces y sufrimientos cuando seguimos a Jesús. He soportado la muerte de mis queridos padres desde que entré en el seminario en 1997. A pesar de algunas cruces muy pesadas, todavía me siento bendecido.
¿Le has ofrecido a Dios todos los dones y talentos que te ha dado?
¿Has sacrificado algo para seguir a Jesús?
¿Has experimentado pruebas mientras sigues al Señor?
¿Cuáles son las bendiciones que has experimentado desde que dijiste “sí” para seguir a Jesús?
No contemos el costo para seguir a Jesús porque Él nos llevará a través de cualquier prueba o sufrimiento, y Él también nos dará la paz y alegría que jamás hemos experimentado de las cosas de este mundo. Es imposible superar a Dios en generosidad, pero te reto a que lo intentes.
