June 4, 2024 – Tuesday of the 9th Week of Ordinary Time
2 Peter 3:12-15a, 17-18
Beloved:
Wait for and hasten the coming of the day of God,
because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames
and the elements melted by fire.
But according to his promise
we await new heavens and a new earth
in which righteousness dwells.
Therefore, beloved, since you await these things,
be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.
And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation.
Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned,
be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled
and to fall from your own stability.
But grow in grace
and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
To him be glory now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

St. Peter urges us to prepare for the coming of the Lord. The prevailing thought was that Jesus would return quickly. However, some people today are lulled to sleep spiritually because Jesus hasn’t returned in over 2000 years. Once might ask, “What is the urgency?”
I would urge you to be prepared every day of your life to meet the Lord. We don’t know when we are going to die nor do we know when the Lord will return. Many people die each day who were not prepared for death. Are you ready? If I live each day as if it were my last on earth, imagine how much meaning and purpose that would add to my life each day. I probably would love people more intentionally. I would let go of the things that are not essential that might otherwise occupy my time and energy. I live in the moment and love the person God places in front of me.
I remember when my dad was battling cancer, during dinner he looked at Jan and me and said, “I’m not afraid to die.” He exuded peace and serenity that came from a place of faith, which had deepened tremendously during the chemotherapy. His statement gave me so much peace as well. He was ready! He reiterated the same faith during his last days on earth. “Don’t worry about me,” he said, “I’m going to be fine because God is coming for me.” What a gift God was giving us through these words from my dad!
Are you prepared if the Lord would come for you today? Do you make the most of every day? Can you go to bed at night saying, “Lord, I have given you everything I could today”?
“Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.”
Am I eager to live a holy life? Do I avoid the near occasion of sin? Do I hate sin because it separates me from God?
“Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability.”
There is a spiritual battle going on all around us. The evil one does not want us to be with God on earth or in heaven. We can make the choice each day to choose God, to choose virtue, to choose to love, to choose joy. Lord, give me the grace to desire holiness and to choose You above all things every day, every minute of my life, starting now. I cannot change my past, but I can live today as if it were my last on earth.

2 Pedro 3, 12-15. 17-18
Hermanos: Piensen con cuánta santidad y entrega deben vivir ustedes esperando y apresurando el advenimiento del día del Señor, cuando desaparecerán los cielos, consumidos por el fuego, y se derretirán los elementos.
Pero nosotros confiamos en la promesa del Señor y esperamos un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva, en que habite la justicia. Por lo tanto, queridos hermanos, apoyados en esta esperanza, pongan todo su empeño en que el Señor los halle en paz con él, sin mancha ni reproche, y consideren que la magnanimidad de Dios es nuestra salvación.
Así pues, queridos hermanos, ya están ustedes avisados; vivan en guardia para que no los arrastre el error de los malvados y pierdan su seguridad. Crezcan en la gracia y el conocimiento de nuestro Señor y Salvador, Jesucristo. A él la gloria, ahora y hasta el día de la eternidad. Amén.

San Pedro nos urge a prepararnos para la venida del Señor. El pensamiento predominante era que Jesús regresaría rápidamente. Sin embargo, algunas personas hoy en día están adormecidas espiritualmente porque Jesús no ha regresado en más de 2000 años. Podrían preguntar: “¿Cuál es la urgencia?”
Te exhorto a estar preparado todos los días de tu vida para encontrar al Señor. No sabemos cuándo vamos a morir ni sabemos cuándo regresará el Señor. Muchas personas mueren cada día quienes no estaban preparadas para la muerte. ¿Estás listo? Si vivo cada día como si fuera el último en la tierra, imagina cuánto significado y propósito añadiría a mi vida cada día. Probablemente amaría a la gente más intencionalmente. Dejaría ir las cosas que no son esenciales que de otra manera podrían ocupar mi tiempo y energía. Vivo en el momento y amo a la persona que Dios pone delante de mí.
Recuerdo cuando mi padre estaba luchando contra el cáncer, durante la cena nos miró a Jan y a mí y nos dijo: “No tengo miedo de morir”. El transpiraba paz y serenidad que provenía de la fe, la cual profundizó enormemente durante la quimioterapia. Su declaración me dio mucha paz también a mí. ¡Estaba listo! Reiteró la misma fe durante sus últimos días en la tierra. “No te preocupes por mí”, dijo, “Voy a estar bien porque Dios viene por mí”. ¡Qué regalo nos estaba dando Dios a través de estas palabras de mi padre!
¿Estás preparado si el Señor vendría por ti hoy? ¿Aprovechas al máximo cada día? ¿Puedes irte a la cama por la noche y decir: “¿Señor, te he dado todo lo que podía hoy”?
“Por lo tanto, amados, apoyados en esta esperanza, pongan todo su empeño en que el Señor los halle en paz con él, sin mancha ni reproche.”
¿Estoy ansioso por vivir una vida santa? ¿Evito la ocasión próxima para pecar? ¿Odio el pecado porque me separa de Dios?
“Por lo tanto, amados, ya que están advertidos, estén en guardia para no ser llevados al error de los sin escrúpulos y caer de tu propia estabilidad”.
Hay una batalla espiritual a nuestro alrededor. El maligno no quiere que estemos con Dios en la tierra o en el cielo. Podemos elegir todos los días elegir a Dios, elegir la virtud, elegir el amor, elegir la alegría. Señor, dame la gracia de desear la santidad y de elegirte por encima de todas las cosas cada día, cada minuto de mi vida, a partir de ahora. No puedo cambiar mi pasado, pero puedo vivir hoy como si fuera el último en la tierra.
