June 7, 2024 – Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
John 19:31-37
Since it was preparation day,
in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath,
for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one,
the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken
and they be taken down.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first
and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs,
but one soldier thrust his lance into his side,
and immediately blood and water flowed out.
An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true;
he knows that he is speaking the truth,
so that you also may come to believe.
For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled:
Not a bone of it will be broken.
And again another passage says:
They will look upon him whom they have pierced.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was placed officially on the Church calendar in 1856, but devotion to the Sacred Heart dates to the Middle Ages. It is a feast on which we honor the great love that Jesus Christ has for us.
In 1281 on the feast of St. John the Evangelist, a Benedictine German mystic by the name of St. Gertrude, had a profound vision in which she laid her head near the wound in the side of Jesus and heard the beating of the Sacred Heart. This is significant because of course St. John laid his head at the breast of Jesus at the Last Supper.
I too had a similar experience in prayer several years in which I rested my head at the chest of Jesus and heard His Most Sacred Heart beating. I am no mystic, but it was an experience of profound peace, joy and grace. I can still go back to that moment in prayer and receive graces that are unending. I feel an intimacy with the Lord and know that He is with me, as He is with you.
Then in the year 1673, Jesus appeared Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque in France. Jesus revealed to her the desires of His Heart, which was to inspire devotion of the Sacred Heart. We don’t know if she knew of the vision that St. Gertrude had some 400 years earlier. Miraculously, (I don’t believe in coincidences), Jesus appeared to Sr. Margaret Mary on December 27th, the feast of St. John the Evangelist, the same day He appeared to St. Gertrude. He revealed to her some important messages in visions over the next two years.
Jesus promised to pour out His divine love upon His children. He requested various things in these visions, including:
1) To receive Communion frequently,
2) To receive Communion especially on the first Friday of each month, and
3) Observe a Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament (an hour of silent prayer in front of the Eucharist).
As you can see, the desires of Jesus all center on the Eucharist. This makes sense because the Eucharist is the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This feast of the Sacred Heart falls on the Friday after we celebrate Corpus Christi every year. Jesus most powerfully shows us His love in the Eucharist – pouring out His very blood on the cross, as we read from John’s gospel today. In the Eucharistic miracle at Lanciano, Italy (you can google this miracle along with many others), the bread and wine changed into flesh and blood during the Mass. The flesh was diagnosed by scientists to be the heart muscle of a human being. No coincidences with Jesus! I had the opportunity to celebrate Mass in Lanciano a few years ago, which was amazing!
Today as we celebrate the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, may we recall Jesus’ incredible love for us. May we remember how He poured out his Blood for us. May we, too, rest our heads upon Jesus’ chest and hear His Most Sacred Heart beating. May we receive His love and then share His love and mercy with the people around us.

Juan 19, 31-37
Como era el día de la preparación de la Pascua, para que los cuerpos de los ajusticiados no se quedaran en la cruz el sábado, porque aquel sábado era un día muy solemne, los judíos pidieron a Pilato que les quebraran las piernas y los quitaran de la cruz.
Fueron los soldados, le quebraron las piernas a uno y luego al otro de los que habían sido crucificados con Jesús. Pero al llegar a él, viendo que ya había muerto, no le quebraron las piernas, sino que uno de los soldados le traspasó el costado con una lanza e inmediatamente salió sangre y agua.
El que vio da testimonio de esto y su testimonio es verdadero y él sabe que dice la verdad, para que también ustedes crean. Esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que dice la Escritura: No le quebrarán ningún hueso; y en otro lugar la Escritura dice: Mirarán al que traspasaron.

La Fiesta del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús fue oficialmente puesta en el calendario de la Iglesia en 1856, pero la devoción al Sagrado Corazón se remonta a la Edad Media. Es una fiesta en la que honramos al gran amor que Jesucristo nos tiene.
En 1281 en la fiesta de San Juan el Evangelista, una benedictina alemana mística con el nombre de Santa Gertrudis, tuvo una visión profunda en la que ella puso su cabeza cerca de la herida en el costado de Jesús y escuchó los latidos del Sagrado Corazón. Esto es significativo porque, por supuesto, San Juan puso su cabeza en el pecho de Jesús en la Última Cena.
Yo también tuve una experiencia en oración similar varios años atrás en la que puse mi cabeza en el pecho de Jesús y escuché el latido de Su Sacratísimo Corazón. Yo no soy místico, pero fue una experiencia de profunda paz, alegría y gracia. Todavía puedo volver a ese momento en oración y recibir las gracias interminables. Siento intimidad con el Señor y sé que Él está conmigo, así como Él está contigo.
Luego, en el año 1673, Jesús se le apareció la Hermana Margarita María Alacoque en Francia. Jesús le reveló los deseos de su corazón, lo que era de inspirar la devoción del Sagrado Corazón. No sabemos si ella sabía de la visión que Santa Gertrudis tuvo unos 400 años antes. Miladrosamente (no creo en las coincidencias), Jesús se le apareció a la Hermana Margarita María el 27 de diciembre, la fiesta de San Juan el Evangelista, el mismo día que Él se le apareció a Santa Gertrudis. Le reveló algunos mensajes importantes en visiones de los próximos dos años.
Jesús prometió derramar su amor divino sobre sus hijos. Solicitó varias cosas en estas visiones, entre ellas:
1) De recibir la Comunión frecuentemente,
2) De recibir la Comunión especialmente el primer viernes de cada mes, y
3) Guardar una Hora Santa ante el Santísimo Sacramento (una hora de oración en silencio ante la Eucaristía).
Como puedes ver, todos los deseos de Jesús se relacionan con la Eucaristía. Esto tiene sentido porque la Eucaristía es el mismo Cuerpo y Sangre de Jesucristo. Esta fiesta del Sagrado Corazón cae el viernes después que celebramos Corpus Christi cada año. Jesús poderosamente nos muestra su amor en la Eucaristía – derramando su misma sangre en la cruz, como leímos del Evangelio de San Juan el día de hoy. En el milagro Eucarístico en Lanciano, Italia (puedes buscar este milagro en Google junto con muchos otros), el pan y el vino se transformaron en carne y sangre durante la Misa. La carne fue diagnosticada por científicos de ser el músculo del corazón de un ser humano. ¡No hay coincidencias con Jesús! ¡Tuve la oportunidad de celebrar misa en Lanciano hace unos años, lo cual fue increíble!
Así que hoy, al celebrar la fiesta del Sacratísimo Corazón de Jesús,
recordemos el increíble amor de Jesús por nosotros. Recordemos cómo Él derramó su Sangre por nosotros. También descansemos nuestras cabezas sobre el pecho de Jesús y escuchemos el latido de Su Sacratísimo Corazón. Que podamos recibir su amor y luego compartir Su amor y misericordia con las personas que nos rodean.
