June 8, 2024 – Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
and when he was twelve years old,
they went up according to festival custom.
After they had completed its days, as they were returning,
the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,
but his parents did not know it.
Thinking that he was in the caravan,
they journeyed for a day
and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
but not finding him,
they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
After three days they found him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers,
listening to them and asking them questions,
and all who heard him were astounded
at his understanding and his answers.
When his parents saw him,
they were astonished,
and his mother said to him,
“Son, why have you done this to us?
Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.”
And he said to them,
“Why were you looking for me?
Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
But they did not understand what he said to them.
He went down with them and came to Nazareth,
and was obedient to them;
and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

Today the Church honors the Immaculate Heart of Mary; yesterday we celebrated the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In today’s Gospel we hear the story of Jesus staying behind in the temple in Jerusalem while His parents returned to Nazareth with the caravan. Imagine the panic in Mary’s heart when she realized that her 12-year-old son was not with the group!
I remember my Mom sharing a story that one day my brother got lost in K-Mart when he was a little boy about 4 years old. In those days it was very common for us to go to the toy area while Mom did her shopping. It was a different world than we live in today in which parents cannot let their children out of their sight. My Mom shared the panic in her heart when she could not find my brother. Fortunately, they were reunited, and nothing happened.
Mary had been visited by the angel Gabriel, who informed her that she would conceive and bear a Son in her virginity. This boy would be the Son of God! When she and Joseph presented Jesus in the temple, Simeon told her that her heart would be pierced by a sword. Mary could only wonder at God’s amazing plans. Mary, who had been entrusted with the Son of God, feared the worst when she could not find Jesus. Like my brother, Jesus was not lost either. When they found Jesus in the Temple, He tells her, “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house? Mary pondered these things in her Immaculate Heart.
As she “kept all these things in her heart,” Mary pondered God’s amazing plan. Because she was a woman of faith, who prayed and pondered these things in her heart, Mary was able to follow Jesus to the cross, despite the horrific pain it must have caused her. That sword most certainly was piercing her heart as Simeon had told her it would. Yet she believed that God’s plan would be fulfilled. Her faith was rewarded when Jesus rose from the dead three days later.
Meditate on these mysteries in your own heart. Learn from Mary how she held on to faith, even in the darkest times. Jesus promised us that we would carry crosses. He also promised us that He would be with us until the end of time. Take these things to prayer. Recall how God has carried you through difficult times. Relate with Him your struggles and the crosses you are bearing. Entrust to Him your every burden and cross. He is with you always, especially when you feel most alone. There might be times that we must kneel at the foot of the cross with Mary, not understanding completely what God is doing. Ask for the faith of Mary at those times.

Los padres de Jesús solían ir cada año a Jerusalén para las festividades de la Pascua. Cuando el niño cumplió doce años, fueron a la fiesta, según la costumbre. Pasados aquellos días, se volvieron; pero el niño Jesús se quedó en Jerusalén, sin que sus padres lo supieran. Creyendo que iba en la caravana, hicieron un día de camino; entonces lo buscaron, y al no encontrarlo, regresaron a Jerusalén en su busca.
Al tercer día lo encontraron en el templo, sentado en medio de los doctores, escuchándolos y haciéndoles preguntas. Todos los que lo oían se admiraban de su inteligencia y de sus respuestas. Al verlo, sus padres se quedaron atónitos y su madre le dijo: “Hijo mío, ¿por qué te has portado así con nosotros? Tu padre y yo te hemos estado buscando llenos de angustia”. Él les respondió: “¿Por qué me andaban buscando? ¿No sabían que debo ocuparme en las cosas de mi Padre?” Ellos no entendieron la respuesta que les dio. Entonces volvió con ellos a Nazaret y siguió sujeto a su autoridad. Su madre conservaba en su corazón todas aquellas cosas.

Hoy la Iglesia honra el Corazón Inmaculado de María; ayer celebramos el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. En el Evangelio de hoy escuchamos la historia de Jesús quedarse atrás en el templo en Jerusalén, mientras que sus padres regresaron con la caravana a Nazaret. ¡Imagina el pánico en el corazón de María cuando se dio cuenta de que su hijo de 12 años no estaba con el grupo!
Recuerdo que mi Mama compartió una historia que un día mi hermano se perdió en K-Mart cuando era un niño de 4 años. En aquellos días era muy común para nosotros ir al área de juguetes mientras que mamá hacía sus compras. Era un mundo diferente al que vivimos hoy en día en el cual los padres no pueden dejar a sus hijos fuera de su vista. Mi mamá compartió el pánico en su corazón cuando no podía encontrar a mi hermano. Afortunadamente se encontraron nuevamente y no pasó nada.
Maria había sido visitada por el ángel Gabriel, quien le informó que ella concebiría y tendría un hijo en su virginidad. ¡Este niño sería el Hijo de Dios! Cuando ella y José presentaron a Jesús en el templo, Simeón le dijo que su corazón sería atravesado por una espada. María solo podía preguntarse por los asombrosos planes de Dios. María, a quien se le había confiado el Hijo de Dios, temía lo peor cuando no podía encontrarlo. Al igual que mi hermano, Jesús tampoco estaba perdido. Cuando encuentran a Jesús en el Templo, Él le dice: “¿No sabían que debo ocuparme en las cosas de mi Padre?” María reflexionó sobre estas cosas en su Corazón Inmaculado.
Como ella “conservaba en su corazón todas aquellas cosas”, María medito el maravilloso plan de Dios. Como era una mujer de fe, que oró y reflexionó sobre estas cosas en su corazón, María pudo seguir a Jesús hasta la cruz, a pesar del horrible dolor que debió haberle causado a su corazón. Esa espada ciertamente estaba atravesando su corazón. Sin embargo, ella creyó que el plan de Dios se cumpliría. Su fe fue recompensada cuando Jesús resucitó de los muertos tres días después.
Medita en estos misterios en tu propio corazón. Aprende de María cómo se aferró a la fe, incluso en los momentos más oscuros. Jesús nos prometió que llevaríamos cruces. Él también nos prometió que estaría con nosotros hasta el final de los tiempos. Lleva estas cosas a la oración. Recuerda cómo Dios te ha llevado a través de los tiempos difíciles. Relaciona con Él tus luchas y las cruces que estás soportando. Confía a Él todas tus cargas y cruces. Él está contigo siempre, especialmente cuando te sientes más solo. Puede haber momentos en que debemos arrodillarnos al pie de la cruz con María, sin entender completamente lo que Dios está haciendo. Pide la fe de María en esos momentos.
