April 26, 2024 – Friday of the 4th Week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 13:26-33

When Paul came to Antioch in Pisidia, he said in the synagogue:
“My brothers, children of the family of Abraham,
and those others among you who are God-fearing,
to us this word of salvation has been sent.
The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him,
and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets
that are read sabbath after sabbath.
For even though they found no grounds for a death sentence,
they asked Pilate to have him put to death,
and when they had accomplished all that was written about him,
they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb.
But God raised him from the dead,
and for many days he appeared to those
who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.
These are now his witnesses before the people.
We ourselves are proclaiming this good news to you
that what God promised our fathers
he has brought to fulfillment for us, their children, by raising up Jesus,
as it is written in the second psalm,
You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.”

As I reflect on my baseball career, I realize that there were times when things were really going well, and I didn’t have to think about what I was doing. The best game of my career included a 6-for-6 performance with a grand slam to help us get to the College World Series. That day I did not have to think about anything. I was in the zone and just reacted to each pitch that came my way. 

There were also times when I would fall into a slump, and I would over-think every situation. I would over-analyze my stance, my swing, everything. Things never turned out well when I did this.

It was during those difficult slumps that my coach would take me “back to the basics.” He would coach me to stop over-analyzing the situation and just react. “Trust your instincts,” he would say, “and imagine a time when things were going really well and visualize that again.” Eventually I would get out of the slump, and everything would fall back into place.

Why do I bring this up? Today Paul takes us “back to the basics” of our faith. He is preaching to the Jews in Antioch, many of whom might have been unfamiliar with Jesus. He began with the basics of the faith in order that they can begin their journey of faith. 

What are the basics? This is what we call the KERYGMA, the basic message of salvation that we should all know, memorize, and be prepared to share with others when the opportunity presents itself.

  1. God loves us and has a wonderful plan for our lives. (Good News)

2. We are sinners. Because of sin, there is a great chasm between us and God that we cannot bridge ourselves. (Bad News)

3. God sent His only Son Jesus to die for our sins. He suffered, was crucified, died, and rose from the dead after three days. He paid the price for our sins and opened the gates of heaven for all who believe in Him. (Better News)

4. This requires a response from us to place our faith in Jesus and change our lives to follow Him faithfully as His disciple.

Are you struggling with your faith? Are you in a spiritual slump? Are you overwhelmed by the complexity of life? Are you shocked by the bad news that is all around us? Are you experiencing a crisis in your life or in your family?

As your spiritual coach, I encourage you to go “back to the basics.”  Remember the first time you encountered Jesus. Read the Gospel story as if it were the first time. Spend time in prayer and be honest with Jesus with what is on your heart. The evil one wants to confuse you and make you overthink things. He wants you to take your eyes off Jesus, like Peter did while walking on the water.

What distracts you from the basics of the faith?

Have you made a conscious decision to follow Jesus as His disciple?

Do you know the kerygma well enough to share it with others?

Hechos de los Apostoles 13:26-33

Cuando Pablo llegó a Antioquía de Pisidia, dijo en la sinagoga;
“Mis hermanos, hijos del linaje de Abraham,
y aquellos otros entre ustedes que temen de Dios,
nos ha sido enviada esta Palabra de salvación.
Los habitantes de Jerusalén y sus jefes no lo reconocieron,
y al condenarlo ellos cumplieron los oráculos de los profetas
que son leídas de sábado en sábado.
Pues no encontraron motivos para una sentencia de muerte,
le pidieron a Pilato que lo condenara,
y cuando cumplieron todo lo que estaba escrito sobre él,
lo bajaron del madero, lo pusieron en un sepulcro.
Pero Dios lo resucitó de entre los muertos,
y por muchos días se apareció a aquellos
que habían subido con él de Galilea a Jerusalén.
Estos son ahora sus testigos ante el pueblo.
Nosotros estamos proclamando esta buena noticia para ustedes
lo que Dios prometió a nuestros padres
que ha llevado a plenitud para nosotros, sus hijos, al resucitar a Jesús,
como está escrito en el segundo salmo:
Tú eres mi Hijo; yo te he engendrado hoy.”

Al reflexionar sobre mi carrera en el béisbol, me doy cuenta de que había momentos cuando las cosas iban realmente bien y no tenía que pensar en lo que estaba haciendo. El mejor partido de mi carrera incluyó una actuación 6-de-6 con un grand slam para ayudarnos a llegar a la Serie Mundial Universitaria. Ese día no tuve que pensar en nada. Estaba en la zona y sólo reaccione a cada lanzamiento que vino a mí.

También hubo momentos en donde caía en una crisis y sobre-pensaba cada situación. Sobre-analizaba mi postura, mi balanceo, todo. Las cosas nunca salían bien cuando hacia esto.

Fue durante esas crisis difíciles que mi entrenador me llevaba “de vuelta a lo básico.” Él me entrenaba para dejar de sobre-analizar la situación y simplemente reaccionar. “Confía en tus instintos”, decía, “e imagina un momento donde las cosas iban muy bien y visualízalo de nuevo.” Eventualmente salía de la crisis y todo volvía a caer en su lugar.

¿Por qué menciono esto? Hoy Pablo nos lleva “de vuelta a lo básico” de nuestra fe. Él está predicando a los judíos en Antioquia, muchos de los cuales pudieron haber estado no familiarizados con Jesús. Él tenía que comenzar con lo básico de la fe, a fin de que puedan iniciar su camino de fe. 

¿Cuáles son los conceptos básicos? Esto es lo que llamamos el KERYGMA, el mensaje básico de salvación que todos debemos conocer, memorizar y ser preparado para compartir con los demás cuando se presenta la oportunidad.

  1. Dios nos ama y tiene un plan maravilloso para nuestras vidas. (Buenas noticias)

2. Somos pecadores. Debido al pecado, hay un gran abismo entre nosotros y Dios que no podemos salvarnos a nosotros mismos. (Malas noticias)

3. Dios envió a Su único Hijo Jesús a morir por nuestros pecados. Sufrió, fue crucificado, murió y resucitó de entre los muertos después de tres días. Pagó el precio por nuestros pecados y abrió las puertas del cielo para todos que creen en El. (Mejores noticias)

4. Esto requiere una respuesta de ustedes y de mí para poner nuestra fe en Jesús y cambiar nuestra vida para seguirlo fielmente como Su discípulo.


¿Estás luchando con tu fe? ¿Estás en una crisis espiritual? ¿Estás agobiado por la complejidad de la vida? ¿Estás conmocionado por las malas noticias que nos rodean? ¿Estás experimentando una crisis en tu vida o en tu familia?

Como tu entrenador espiritual te animo a “volver a lo básico.” Recuerda la primera vez que te encontraste con Jesús. Lee la historia del Evangelio como si fuera la primera vez. Pasa tiempo en oración y se honesto con Jesús con lo que está en tu corazón. El maligno quiere confundirte y hacerte pensar demasiado en las cosas. Él quiere que le quites los ojos a Jesús, como lo hizo Pedro mientras caminaba sobre el agua.


¿Qué es lo que te distrae de lo básico de la fe?

¿Has tomado la decisión consciente de seguir a Jesús como Su discípulo?

¿Conoces el kerygma lo suficientemente bien como para compartirlo con otros?
