May 2, 2024 – Memorial of St. Athanasius, Bishop & Doctor of the Church

Acts of the Apostles 15:7-21

After much debate had taken place,
Peter got up and said to the Apostles and the presbyters,
“My brothers, you are well aware that from early days
God made his choice among you that through my mouth
the Gentiles would hear the word of the Gospel and believe.
And God, who knows the heart,
bore witness by granting them the Holy Spirit
just as he did us.
He made no distinction between us and them,
for by faith he purified their hearts.
Why, then, are you now putting God to the test
by placing on the shoulders of the disciples
a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear?
On the contrary, we believe that we are saved
through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they.”
The whole assembly fell silent,
and they listened
while Paul and Barnabas described the signs and wonders
God had worked among the Gentiles through them.

After they had fallen silent, James responded,
“My brothers, listen to me.
Symeon has described how God first concerned himself
with acquiring from among the Gentiles a people for his name.
The words of the prophets agree with this, as is written:

After this I shall return
and rebuild the fallen hut of David;
from its ruins I shall rebuild it
and raise it up again,
so that the rest of humanity may seek out the Lord,
even all the Gentiles on whom my name is invoked.
Thus says the Lord who accomplishes these things,
known from of old.

It is my judgment, therefore,
that we ought to stop troubling the Gentiles who turn to God,
but tell them by letter to avoid pollution from idols,
unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood.
For Moses, for generations now,
has had those who proclaim him in every town,
as he has been read in the synagogues every sabbath.”

ST. ATHANASIUS – He was born in Alexandria, Egypt and served that city as it’s bishop for forty six years. He was a strong proponent of the teachings of the Council of Nicea (325 AD) saying the Jesus was “consubstantial with the Father” against the Arian heresy. This heresy produced a great divide among the Church and civil leaders, leading Athanasius to be exiled repeatedly. He died in 373 AD.

We have a “behind the scenes” look at the first Church council (the first gathering of the Church leaders) as Peter addressed the early apostles. When Jesus walked the earth, He chose Peter, James, and John for special occasions like the Transfiguration and the agony in the garden. We see in the reading today that Peter is the leader, with James right by his side. This is the same James whose tomb we visited at the end of the Camino in Santiago, Spain.

They were debating if the Gentile converts should be circumcised. Peter told them that God makes no distinction between Jew and Gentile. God granted to the Gentiles the Holy Spirit and purified their hearts, so there was no need that they should be circumcised. Then Paul and Barnabas shared stories of “the signs and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles through them.”

This was a critical meeting that the Holy Spirit guided in the early Church.  Jesus had come to save every human being without distinction – rich and poor, Jew and Gentile, man and woman. All are offered grace and are called into a deep relationship with Jesus and to live with Him forever in heaven.

After the debate, they decided that the new converts did not need to be circumcised, but they did ask them to refrain from the “pollution from idols, unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood.” In other words, they did not lay heavy burdens on them, but at the same time there were rules they should follow.

Sometimes in the Church today people think that there are too many rules. It is true that “we are saved through the grace of our Lord Jesus.” Grace is always primary. We were loved by God first. However, God and the Church have offered rules and laws to keep us along the right path. For example, God gave us the Ten Commandments to protect us because He loves us.  The Church, continuously guided by the Holy Spirit, gives us laws to protect us because God loves us.

Reflect on your own lives. When you follow the ways of the Lord, peace, freedom and joy often follow.  However, when you follow your own selfish ways of sin, it leads to sadness, misery, frustration and bondage.

You and I are fortunate recipients of this first Church council and subsequent councils. Whenever we are faced with something new that may not be explicitly addressed by the Scriptures, like abortion, in-vitro fertilization, birth control and cloning, the Church, inspired by the Holy Spirit, gathers to discern God’s will. The leaders of the Church pray, debate and teach in the name of the Lord.  These teachings are not always easy to follow, like many things in Scripture, but they are for the good of our souls.

How do I view the “rules” and “laws” of the Church?

Do I believe that the Holy Spirit guides the world and my life through His Holy Church?

Hechos de los Apóstoles 15:7-21

Por aquellos días, después de una larga discusión sobre el asunto de la circuncisión, Pedro se levantó y dijo a los apóstoles y a los presbíteros:

“Hermanos: Ustedes saben que, ya desde los primeros días, Dios me eligió entre ustedes para que los paganos oyeran, por mi medio, las palabras del Evangelio y creyeran. Dios, que conoce los corazones, mostró su aprobación dándoles el Espíritu Santo, igual que a nosotros. No hizo distinción alguna, ya que purificó sus corazones con la fe.

¿Por qué quieren irritar a Dios imponiendo sobre los discípulos ese yugo, que ni nuestros padres ni nosotros hemos podido soportar? Nosotros creemos que nos salvaremos por la gracia del Señor Jesús, del mismo modo que ellos”.

Toda la asamblea guardó silencio y se pusieron a oír a Bernabé y a Pablo, que contaban las grandes señales y prodigios que Dios había hecho entre los paganos por medio suyo. Cuando terminaron de hablar, Santiago tomó la palabra y dijo:

“Hermanos, escúchenme. Pedro nos ha referido cómo, por primera vez, se dignó Dios escoger entre los paganos un pueblo que fuera suyo. Esto concuerda con las palabras de los profetas, porque está escrito: Después de estos sucesos volveré y reconstruiré de nuevo la casa de David, que se había derrumbado; repararé sus ruinas y la reedificaré, para que el resto de los hombres busque al Señor, lo mismo que todas las naciones que han sido consagradas a mi nombre. El Señor que hace estas cosas es quien lo dice. Él las conoce desde la eternidad.

Por lo cual, yo juzgo que no se debe molestar a los paganos que se convierten a Dios; basta prescribirles que se abstengan de la fornicación, de comer lo inmolado a los ídolos, la sangre y los animales estrangulados. Si alguien se extraña, Moisés tiene, desde antiguo, quienes lo predican en las ciudades, puesto que cada sábado se lee en las sinagogas”.

SAN ATANASIUS – Nació en Alejandría, Egipto y sirvió en esa ciudad como obispo durante cuarenta y seis años. Fue un firme defensor de las enseñanzas del Concilio de Nicea (325 d.C.) que decía que Jesús era “consustancial al Padre” contra la herejía arriana. Esta herejía produjo una gran división entre la Iglesia y los líderes civiles, lo que llevó a Atanasio al exilio repetidas veces. Murió en el año 373 d.C.

Tenemos una a mirada “detrás de la escena” en el primer concilio de la Iglesia (la primera reunión de los líderes de la Iglesia) mientras Pedro se dirigió a los primeros apóstoles. Cuando Jesus camino en la tierra, escogió a Pedro, Santiago y Juan para ocasiones especiales como la Transfiguración y la agonía en el jardín.  Vemos en la lectura de hoy que Pedro es el líder, con Santiago a su lado. Este es el mismo Santiago cuya tumba visitamos al final del Camino en Santiago, España.

Estaban debatiendo si los paganos convertidos deben ser circuncidados. Pedro les dijo que Dios no hace distinción entre judío y pagano. Dios les concedió el Espíritu Santo a los paganos y purificó sus corazones, así que no había necesidad de que debieran ser circuncidados. Luego Pablo y Bernabé compartieron historias de “las grandes señales y prodigios que Dios había hecho entre los paganos por medio suyo.”

Esta fue una reunión crítica que el Espíritu Santo guió en la Iglesia primitiva. Jesús había venido a salvar a cada ser humano sin distinción – rico y pobre, judío y pagano, hombre y mujer.  A todos les ofrece gracia y están llamados a una relación profunda con Jesús para vivir con Él para siempre en el cielo.

Después del debate, decidieron que los nuevos convertidos no necesitaban ser circuncidados, pero les pidieron que se abstengan de la”fornicación, de comer lo inmolado a los ídolos, la sangre y los animales estrangulados.” En otras palabras, no pusieron cargas pesadas sobre ellos, pero al mismo tiempo había reglas que debían seguir.

A veces, en la Iglesia de hoy en día la gente piensa que hay demasiadas reglas. Es cierto que “somos salvados por la gracia de nuestro Señor Jesús.” La gracia siempre es primero.  Dios nos ama primero.  Sin embargo, Dios y la Iglesia han ofrecido reglas y leyes para mantenernos en el camino del Señor. Por ejemplo, Dios nos dio los Diez Mandamientos para protegernos porque nos ama. La Iglesia, guiada continuamente por el Espíritu Santo, nos da leyes para protegernos porque Dios nos ama.

Reflejen en sus propias vidas.  Cuando sigues los caminos del Señor, la paz, la libertad y la alegría a menudo siguen. Sin embargo, cuando sigues tus propios caminos egoístas de pecado, te llevan a la tristeza, a la miseria, a la frustración y a la esclavitud.

Ustedes y yo somos destinatarios afortunados de este primer consejo de la Iglesia y los concilios subsecuentes. Cuando nos enfrentamos con algo nuevo que no es explícito en las Escrituras, como el aborto, fertilización in-vitro, contraconceptivos, y clonación, la Iglesia, inspirada por el Espíritu Santo, se reúne para discernir la voluntad de Dios.  Los líderes de la Iglesia oran, debaten y ensenan en el nombre del Señor.  Estas enseñanzas no son fáciles de seguir siempre, como muchas cosas en la Biblia, pero son para el bien de nuestras almas.
