May 3, 2024 – Feast of Saints Philip and James, Apostles

1 Corinthians 15:1-8

I am reminding you, brothers and sisters,

of the Gospel I preached to you,

which you indeed received and in which you also stand.

Through it you are also being saved,

if you hold fast to the word I preached to you,

unless you believed in vain.

For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received:

that Christ died for our sins

in accordance with the Scriptures;

that he was buried;

that he was raised on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures;

that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.

After that, he appeared to more

than five hundred brothers and sisters at once,

most of whom are still living,

though some have fallen asleep.

After that he appeared to James,

then to all the Apostles.

Last of all, as to one born abnormally,

he appeared to me.

Today the Church remembers St. Philip and St. James, two of the twelve that Jesus chose to be His apostles. Not only did the Lord choose Philip and James to be His apostles, but he appeared to James (today’s reading) and the other apostles to inspire them to go out and spread the Good News of the resurrection.

In this letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reviews with us the basics of the faith – Jesus died, was buried, and was raised on the third day. This is the best possible news because Jesus’s passion, death and resurrection has opened for us the gates of heaven. This message needs to be shared repeatedly in our culture to remind that we were created by God to return to God.

Jesus appeared to many people after the resurrection, including James and the rest of the Apostles. This is not James, the brother of John. The James we honor today is known as James the Lesser just to differentiate him from James the Greater, the son of Zebedee. Some accounts say that James was a cousin of Jesus and looked very much like Jesus. He eventually gave his life for Jesus because he was convinced that Jesus had risen from the dead and was the Son of God.

Philip became a disciple of Christ after following John the Baptist for a while. Once he met the Lord, he knew he could follow no one else. We read in the Gospel today (John 14:6-14) that Philip was confused when he said to Jesus, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” After all the time Jesus spent with the Twelve, they still did not understand that He was the perfect reflection of the Father and He IS God. It should be comforting to us sinners that despite their shortcomings, Philip and James became great evangelists, leaders, and saints.

What can we learn from the lives of Philip and James today? 

Have we truly encountered Jesus in such a way that it transforms our lives? 

Are we willing to say YES wherever He leads us? 

Are we ready to share with others the joy of the resurrection? 

Do I trust that God can use me as His instrument even though I am not perfect?

May our lives proclaim the Good News of Jesus risen from the dead today and always. St. Philip and St. James, pray for us.

1 Corintios 15, 1-8

Hermanos: Les recuerdo el Evangelio que yo les prediqué y que ustedes aceptaron y en el cual están firmes. Este Evangelio los salvará, si lo cumplen tal y como yo lo prediqué. De otro modo, habrán creído en vano.

Les transmití, ante todo, lo que yo mismo recibí: Que Cristo murió por nuestros pecados, como dicen las Escrituras; que fue sepultado y que resucitó al tercer día, según estaba escrito; que se le apareció a Pedro y luego a los Doce; después se apareció a más de quinientos hermanos reunidos, la mayoría de los cuales vive aún y otros ya murieron. Más tarde se le apareció a Santiago y luego a todos los apóstoles. Finalmente, se me apareció también a mí.

Hoy la Iglesia recuerda a san Felipe y a Santiago, dos de los doce que Jesús eligió para ser sus apóstoles. El Señor no solo eligió a Felipe y Santiago para ser Sus apóstoles, sino que se apareció a Santiago (la lectura de hoy) y a los otros apóstoles para inspirarlos a salir y difundir la Buena Nueva de la resurrección.
 


En esta carta a los corintios, San Pablo revisa con nosotros los conceptos básicos de la fe: Jesús murió, fue enterrado y resucitó al tercer día. Esta es la mejor noticia posible porque la pasión, la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús nos han abierto las puertas del cielo. Este mensaje debe compartirse repetidamente en nuestra cultura para recordar que fuimos creados por Dios para regresar a Dios.

Jesús se apareció a muchas personas después de la resurrección, incluidos Santiago y el resto de los apóstoles. Este no es Santiago, el hermano de Juan. Este Santiago que honramos hoy es conocido como James el Menor sólo para diferenciarlo del Santiago el Mayor, hijo de Zebedeo. Algunos relatos dicen que Santiago era primo de Jesús y se parecía mucho a Jesús. Finalmente dio su vida por Jesús porque estaba convencido de que Jesús había resucitado de entre los muertos y era el Hijo de Dios.
 


Felipe se convirtió en un discípulo de Cristo después de seguir a Juan el Bautista por un poco de tiempo. Una vez que se encontró con el Señor, supo que no podía seguir a nadie más. Leemos en el Evangelio de hoy (Juan 14, 6-14) que Felipe estaba confundido cuando le dijo a Jesús: “Maestro, muéstranos al Padre, y eso será suficiente para nosotros”. Después de todo el tiempo que Jesús pasó con los Doce, ellos todavía no entendieron que Él era el reflejo perfecto del Padre y que Él ES DIOS. Debería ser reconfortante para nosotros los pecadores que a pesar de sus defectos, Felipe y Santiago se convirtieron en grandes evangelistas, líderes y santos.

¿Qué podemos aprender hoy de las vidas de Felipe y Santiago?
¿Hemos encontrado verdaderamente a Jesús de tal manera que transforma nuestras vidas?
¿Estamos dispuestos a decir SI dondequiera que Él nos guíe?
¿Estamos listos para compartir con otros el gozo de la resurrección?
¿Confío en que Dios puede usarme como su instrumento, aunque yo no sea perfecto?
 


Que nuestras vidas proclamen hoy y siempre la Buena Nueva de Jesús resucitado de entre los muertos. Santos Felipe y Santiago, rueguen por nosotros.
