May 7, 2024 – Tuesday of the 6th week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 16:22-34

The crowd in Philippi joined in the attack on Paul and Silas,
and the magistrates had them stripped
and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
After inflicting many blows on them,
they threw them into prison
and instructed the jailer to guard them securely.
When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell
and secured their feet to a stake.

About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying
and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened,
there was suddenly such a severe earthquake
that the foundations of the jail shook;
all the doors flew open, and the chains of all were pulled loose.
When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open,
he drew his sword and was about to kill himself,
thinking that the prisoners had escaped.
But Paul shouted out in a loud voice,
“Do no harm to yourself; we are all here.”
He asked for a light and rushed in and,
trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas.
Then he brought them out and said,
“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus
and you and your household will be saved.”
So they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house.
He took them in at that hour of the night and bathed their wounds;
then he and all his family were baptized at once.
He brought them up into his house and provided a meal
and with his household rejoiced at having come to faith in God.

This story from the Acts of the Apostles has so many wonderful elements. We see the response of Paul and Silas after they were beaten and imprisoned for preaching the name of Jesus. They were singing hymns and sharing the Good News with their fellow prisoners. 

Am I able to praise God openly, even after I have been rejected or punished for my faith?

While Paul and Silas were singing hymns to the Lord, there was an earthquake that opened the doors to the jail and freed all the prisoners. Normally prisoners would run for freedom if the doors to the prison were opened. Instead of fleeing, they showed their concern for the jailer, who was going to commit suicide because he thought all the prisoners had escaped. Paul and Silas ministered to the jailer to the point that he and his whole family were baptized. These missionary disciples helped a man who was despairing and on the brink of suicide to accept Jesus and be baptized!

Do I believe that God can deliver me from any situation?

Is my heart so on fire for the Lord that I’m willing to share my faith with anyone?

If not, what do I need to do to deepen my faith and spark my heart to evangelize more?

Although we don’t know the ages of the children of the jailer, this is one area of the Bible where we think that infants and children were baptized. It says, “He and all his family were baptized at once.” Paul and Silas said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved.” In other words, the faith of the father was enough for his whole family to be baptized. This is one of the reasons we baptize infants still today. They receive the divine life of the Holy Spirit through baptism and become children of God, their lifelong identity. As they grow older, these children then accept the responsibility for following Jesus that began with their parents’ faith years prior.

Lord, we thank you for the gifts of Paul and Silas, who shared their love for you to all they met. Thank you also for the people you have sent into our lives that have inspired us to be better disciples. Increase our faith, Lord. Help our hearts to burn with zeal and love for you so that we want to share you with everyone we meet. We want to be a catalyst for others coming to know and serve you. We want to be your instruments that bring others to faith and baptism.

Hechos de los Apostoles 16:22-34

En aquellos días, la gente de la ciudad de Filipos se alborotó contra Pablo y Silas, y los magistrados ordenaron que los desnudaran y los azotaran. Después de azotarlos mucho, los metieron en la cárcel y le ordenaron al carcelero que los vigilara bien. Siguiendo esta orden, él los metió en el calabozo de más adentro y les aseguró los pies en el cepo.

A eso de la medianoche, Pablo y Silas estaban en oración, cantando himnos al Señor, y los otros presos los escuchaban. De pronto sobrevino un temblor tan violento, que se sacudieron los cimientos de la cárcel, las puertas se abrieron de golpe y a todos se les soltaron las cadenas.

El carcelero se despertó, y al ver las puertas de la cárcel abiertas de par en par, pensó que los presos se habían fugado y sacó su espada para matarse. Pero entonces Pablo le gritó: “No te hagas ningún daño; aquí estamos todos”. El carcelero pidió una lámpara, se precipitó hacia dentro, y temblando, se arrojó a los pies de Pablo y Silas. Después los sacó de allí y les preguntó: “¿Qué debo hacer para salvarme?” Ellos le contestaron: “Cree en el Señor Jesús y te salvarás, tú y tu familia”. Y les explicaron la palabra del Señor a él y a todos los de su casa.

El carcelero se los llevó aparte, y en aquella misma hora de la noche les lavó las heridas y enseguida se bautizó él con todos los suyos. Después los invitó a su casa, les preparó la mesa y celebraron una fiesta familiar por haber creído en Dios.

Esta historia de los Hechos de los Apóstoles tiene tantos elementos maravillosos. Vemos la respuesta de Pablo y Silas después de que fueron golpeados y encarcelados por predicar el nombre de Jesús. Ellos estaban cantando himnos y compartiendo la Buena Nueva con sus compañeros de prisión.

¿Soy capaz de alabar a Dios abiertamente, incluso después de haber sido rechazado o castigado por mi fe? 

Mientras Pablo y Silas cantaban himnos al Señor, hubo un terremoto que abrió las puertas de la cárcel y liberó a todos los prisioneros. Normalmente los prisioneros corrían por la libertad si se abrieran las puertas de la prisión.  En lugar de huir, mostraron su preocupación por el carcelero, que se iba a suicidar porque pensaba que todos los prisioneros habían escapado.  Pablo y Silas ministraron al carcelero hasta el punto de que él y toda su familia fueron bautizados. ¡Estos discípulos misioneros ayudaron a un hombre desesperado y al borde del suicidio a aceptar a Jesús y ser bautizado!

¿Creo que Dios puede liberarme de cualquier situación?

¿Está mi corazón tan encendido por el Señor que estoy dispuesto a compartir mi fe con cualquier persona?

Si no, ¿qué debo hacer para profundizar en mi fe y encender mi corazón para evangelizar más?

Aunque no se sabe la edad de los hijos del carcelero, esta es una parte de la Biblia donde pensamos que bebés y niños fueron bautizados. Dice: “Se bautizó él con todos los suyos.” Pablo y Silas dijeron: “Cree en el Señor Jesús y te salvarás, tú y tu familia”. En otras palabras, la fe del padre era suficiente para que su familia entera fuera bautizada. Esta es una de las razones por las que bautizamos a los infantes-bebes hasta todavía hoy. Reciben la vida divina del Espíritu Santo a través del bautismo y se convierten en hijos de Dios, su identidad de toda la vida. A medida que crecen, estos niños aceptan la responsabilidad de seguir a Jesús que comenzó con la fe de sus padres años antes.

Señor, te damos gracias por los dones de Pablo y Silas, quienes compartieron su amor por ti con todos los que conocieron. Gracias también por la gente que has enviado en nuestras vidas que nos han inspirado a ser mejores discípulos. Aumenta nuestra fe, Señor. Ayuda a que nuestros corazones ardan con celo y amor por ti para que queramos compartirte con todos los que conozcamos. Queremos ser catalizadores para otros que vienen a conocerte y a servirte. Queremos ser tus instrumentos que traen a otros a la fe y al bautismo.
