May 20, 2024 – Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

John 19:25-34

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary of Magdala.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved,
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
“Behold, your mother.”
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
After this, aware that everything was now finished,
in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
Jesus said, “I thirst.”
There was a vessel filled with common wine.
So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop
and put it up to his mouth.
When Jesus had taken the wine, he said,
“It is finished.”
And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit. 

Now since it was preparation day,
in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath,
for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one,
the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken
and they be taken down.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first
and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs,
but one soldier thrust his lance into his side,
and immediately Blood and water flowed out.

Today the Church is celebrating a memorial that was instituted by Pope Francis in 2018 – Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. It will be celebrated each year the day after Pentecost, which is the birthday of the Church. Pope Francis wanted us to remember the strong influence Mary had on the early Church and she continues to have a great impact on the Church today.

Imagine what Mary went through the day of Jesus’s passion and crucifixion.  Not only is it heart-wrenching for a parent to lose a child, but Mary had to watch her son be brutally tortured and killed. I cannot imagine the sorrow in her heart that day.

Was Mary reflecting on the day she and Joseph presented Jesus in the temple when Simeon said that a sword would pierce her heart? Was she reflecting on all the beautiful moments with her Son throughout His life? Was she reflecting on Jesus’s words about His own death and resurrection?

During her moment of deepest pain as she looked upon her son on the cross, Jesus reached out to her with some consolation. Mary would have lost all her standing in society by losing her Son, since her husband was already deceased. Jesus, in His own agony, gave John to Mary and Mary to John. In her time of agony, Jesus was there for her, despite His own pain.

“And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.” (John 19:27) We can only imagine the conversations between John and Mary after Jesus was crucified. Mary probably shared with him the moment the angel Gabriel appeared to her to announce the conception of Jesus in her womb. They probably talked about His childhood and all the things Jesus did and said while growing up. Maybe they talked about this experience with Simeon in the Temple. Surely, they comforted one another by reviewing His prediction of His own resurrection from the dead.

Why is Mary the Mother of the Church? She was with the disciples in the upper room when the Holy Spirit descended upon them. This was the birth of the Church. She loved these men like sons, especially as John went to live with her. Both Mary and the Church are given to us to guide us to Jesus and to heaven. 

Do you trust that the Lord is with you in your deepest pain? 

Can you relate with our Blessed Mother during her time of deep sorrow?

Have you invited Mary into your home and heart so that she can give you a deeper understanding of her Son?

John 19, 25-34

En aquel tiempo, junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre, la hermana de su madre, María la de Cleofás, y María Magdalena. Al ver a su madre y junto a ella al discípulo que tanto quería, Jesús dijo a su madre: “Mujer, ahí está tu hijo”. Luego dijo al discípulo: “Ahí está tu madre”. Y desde entonces el discípulo se la llevó a vivir con él.

Después de esto, sabiendo Jesús que todo había llegado a su término, para que se cumpliera la Escritura dijo: “Tengo sed”. Había allí un jarro lleno de vinagre. Los soldados sujetaron una esponja empapada en vinagre a una caña de hisopo y se la acercaron a la boca. Jesús probó el vinagre y dijo: “Todo está cumplido”, e inclinando la cabeza, entregó el espíritu.

Entonces, los judíos, como era el día de la preparación de la Pascua, para que los cuerpos de los ajusticiados no se quedaran en la cruz el sábado, porque aquel sábado era un día muy solemne, pidieron a Pilato que les quebraran las piernas y los quitaran de la cruz. Fueron los soldados, le quebraron las piernas a uno y luego al otro de los que habían sido crucificados con Jesús. Pero al llegar a él, viendo que ya había muerto, no le quebraron las piernas, sino que uno de los soldados le traspasó el costado con una lanza e inmediatamente salió sangre y agua.

¡Feliz Día Conmemorativo! Oramos por todos los valientes hombres y mujeres que han muerto sirviendo a nuestro país y protegiendo nuestra libertad.

Hoy la Iglesia celebra un memorial que fue instituido por el Papa Francisco en 2018 – Santísima Virgen María, Madre de la Iglesia. Se celebrará cada año el día después de Pentecostés, que es el cumpleaños de la Iglesia. El Papa Francisco quería que recordáramos la fuerte influencia que María tuvo en la Iglesia primitiva y sigue teniendo un gran impacto en la Iglesia de hoy.

Imagínese lo que María pasó por el día de la pasión y la crucifixión de Jesús. No sólo es desgarrador para un padre perder a un hijo, pero María tuvo que ver a su hijo ser brutalmente matado y torturado. No me puedo imaginar el dolor en su corazón ese día.

¿Estaba María reflexionando sobre el día en que ella y José presentaron a Jesús en el templo cuando Simeón dijo que una espada atravesaría su corazón? ¿Estaba reflexionando sobre todos los bellos momentos con su Hijo a lo largo de Su vida? ¿Estaba reflexionando sobre las palabras de Jesús acerca de Su propia muerte y resurrección?

Durante su momento de dolor más profundo mientras miraba a su hijo en la cruz, Jesús se acercó a ella con un poco de consuelo. María habría perdido toda su posición en la sociedad con la pérdida de su hijo, ya que su esposo había fallecido. Jesús, en Su propia agonía, dio Juan a María y María a Juan. En su momento de agonía, Jesús estaba allí para ella, a pesar de Su propio dolor.

“Y desde entonces el discípulo se la llevó a vivir con él.” (Juan 19:27) Sólo nos podemos imaginar las conversaciones entre Juan y María después de que Jesús fue crucificado. María probablemente compartió con él el momento en que el ángel Gabriel se le apareció para anunciarle la concepción de Jesús en su vientre. Probablemente hablaron de Su infancia y todas las cosas que hizo Jesús y dijo durante Su crecimiento. Tal vez hablaron de esta experiencia con Simeón en el Templo.  Seguramente se consolaron mutuamente examinando Su predicción de Su propia resurrección de entre los muertos.

¿Por qué María es la Madre de la Iglesia? Ella estaba con los discípulos en el cenáculo cuando el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre ellos. Este fue el nacimiento de la Iglesia. Ella amaba a estos hombres como hijos, especialmente cuando John se fue a vivir con ella. Tanto María como la Iglesia nos son dadas para guiarnos a Jesús y al cielo.

¿Confías en que el Señor está contigo en tu dolor más profundo?

¿Puedes relacionarte con nuestra Santa Madre durante su tiempo de profundo dolor?

¿Has invitado a María a tu hogar y corazón para que ella pueda darte un entendimiento más profundo de su Hijo?
