May 22, 2024 – Optional Memorial of St. Rita of Cascia, religious

James 4:13-17

Beloved:
Come now, you who say,
“Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town,
spend a year there doing business, and make a profit”–
you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.
You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears.
Instead you should say,
“If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that.”
But now you are boasting in your arrogance.
All such boasting is evil.
So for one who knows the right thing to do
and does not do it, it is a sin.

Today the Church remembers St. Rita of Cascia (1381 – 1457 AD). She was married to a very difficult man and they had two children. The two sons wanted to kill their father because he mistreated their mother so terribly. Rita prayed that God would preserve them from sin, and both sons died of natural causes before they could commit this grave sin. Rita entered the Augustinian convent in Cascia, Italy. She prayed to be closely united to Jesus’ passion and was given the gift of the wound of a thorn driven into her forehead. She is the patroness of impossible causes.

Do you have your life planned out? Do you have it all figured out? That was me many years ago. I had my life planned. I was going to be a professional baseball player, get married, have a large family, make a lot of money, and live happily ever after. That was the plan. I asked God to bless my plan. I’m sure we have all done that.

And yet…St. James tells us today, “you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.” We should be saying, “If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that.” In other words, we should be seeking the will of God in our lives above all else.

This reading reminds me to live in the present moment. Some people live in the past, always thinking of the “good old days”. Some people live in the future, always thinking about the next project, the next goal, the next promotion, the next thing to do. Few people live in the present moment, enjoying the gift that God gives us in the person or experience right in front of us.

Several years ago, I was giving a vocation talk 8th graders and many of them were so worried about their future. They felt great pressure to have their entire lives figured out by the time they entered high school. We are not allowing our children to be children and enjoy many different experiences. They can’t enjoy many sports because they must specialize in one sport as young children. They must build their resumes so they can be competitive when choosing a college. They must have their lives planned out. We are not teaching them to ask God for His plan for their lives. Are we asking God for His plan for our lives?

God does not tell us where our lives our heading.  He does not give us the 10-year or 20-year plan. In fact, my experience is that God wants us to trust Him in the present moment. He shows us the next right step and then we trust that He will give us the next right step after that. The key is that we keep praying, seeking God’s will, and trusting.

I tried two different careers before I realized that my calling was to be a priest.  Sometimes people must date different people before they find the person God meant for them to marry. As we grow in our relationship with Christ through prayer, the Eucharist, confession, Scripture, being with good people, and sharing God’s love, God will lead us, step by step, through life. Yes, we can plan and ask for certain things from God, but the ultimate prayer is “Your will be done.”

Do I live in the past, present or future?

Do I seek God’s will above all else?

I heard Mike Ditka give a talk at a Knights of Columbus event. He quotes one of the nuns that taught him in grade school, and he still remembered it after all these years. “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that’s why they call it the present.”

Learn from the past.  Plan for the future.  But live in the present.

Santiago 4:13-17

Hermanos míos: Consideremos ahora a los que dicen: “Hoy o mañana saldremos para tal ciudad, ahí viviremos unos años, pondremos un negocio y nos haremos ricos”. Ésos no tienen idea de lo que será el mañana. Pues ¿qué cosa es la vida de ustedes? Una nubecilla que se ve un rato y luego se desvanece.

Lo que ustedes deberían decir es esto: “Si el Señor nos presta vida, haremos esto y aquello”. En lugar de eso, presumen de ser autosuficientes; y toda esa clase de presunciones es mala.

En resumen, el que sabe cómo portarse bien y no lo hace, está en pecado.

Hoy la Iglesia recuerda a Santa Rita de Casia (1381 – 1457 d.C.). Estaba casada con un hombre muy difícil y tenían dos hijos. Los dos hijos querían matar a su padre porque maltrataba terriblemente a su madre. Rita oró para que Dios los preservara del pecado, y ambos hijos murieron por causas naturales antes de que pudieran cometer este grave pecado. Rita ingresó al convento de los Agustinos en Cascia, Italia. Ella oró para estar estrechamente unida a la pasión de Jesús y recibió el regalo de la herida de una espina clavada en su frente. Es la patrona de las causas imposibles.

¿Tienes tu vida planeada? ¿Lo tienes todo resuelto? Ese era yo hace muchos años. Yo tenía mi vida planeada. Yo iba a ser un jugador profesional de béisbol, casarme, tener una familia grande, hacer mucho dinero y vivir feliz para siempre. Ese era el plan. Le pedí a Dios que bendiga mi plan. Estoy seguro que todos hemos hecho eso.

Y sin embargo… Santiago nos dice hoy, “no tienen idea de lo que será el mañana.” Deberíamos estar diciendo: “Si el Señor nos presta vida, haremos esto y aquello.” En otras palabras, deberíamos estar buscando la voluntad de Dios en nuestras vidas por encima de todo.

Esta lectura me recuerda a que viva en el momento presente. Algunas personas viven en el pasado, siempre pensando en los “buenos viejos tiempos”. Algunas personas viven en el futuro, siempre pensando en el próximo proyecto, la próxima meta, la próxima promoción, el siguiente paso. Pocas personas viven en el momento presente, disfrutando el regalo que Dios nos da en la persona o experiencia justo en frente de nosotros.

Cuando leí la vida de los santos, una cosa que tienen en común es la capacidad de vivir en el presente. Cuando estoy en la presencia de personas santas, siento como si yo fuera la única persona viva en ese momento. Ellos me dan toda su atención. Muchas personas han comentado cómo San Juan Pablo II y la Beata Madre Teresa podían dar toda su atención al momento presente y a la persona en frente de ellos. Estoy seguro de que cualquier persona que se encontró con Jesús tuvo esta misma experiencia.

Hace varios años, estaba dando una charla vocacional a estudiantes en el 8º grado y muchos de ellos estaban muy preocupados por su futuro. Sintieron una gran presión para tener toda su vida resuelta para cuando ingresaron a la escuela secundaria. No estamos permitiendo que nuestros hijos sean niños y disfruten de muchas experiencias diferentes. No pueden disfrutar de muchos deportes porque deben especializarse en un deporte cuando son niños pequeños. Deben construir sus currículums para que puedan ser competitivos al elegir una universidad. Deben tener sus vidas planificadas. No les estamos enseñando a pedirle a Dios por Su plan para sus vidas. ¿Le estamos pidiendo a Dios por Su plan para nuestras vidas?

Dios no nos dice cómo nos dirigimos en nuestras vidas. Él no nos da el plan de 10 o 20 años en el futuro. De hecho, mi experiencia es que Dios quiere que confiemos en Él en el momento presente. Él nos muestra el siguiente paso correcto y luego confiamos en que Él nos dará el próximo paso correcto. La clave es que seguimos orando, buscando la voluntad de Dios y confiando.

Intenté dos carreras diferentes antes de darme cuenta de que mi vocación era la de ser sacerdote. A veces las personas deben salir con diferentes personas antes de encontrar a la persona que Dios quiere que se case. A medida que crecemos en nuestra relación con Cristo a través de la oración, la Eucaristía, la confesión, las Escrituras, estar con las personas buenas y compartir el amor de Dios, Dios nos guiará, paso a paso, a través de la vida. Sí, podemos planificar y pedir ciertas cosas a Dios, pero la oración final es “hágase tu voluntad”.


¿Vivo en el pasado, presente o futuro?
¿Busco la voluntad de Dios por encima de todo?

Escuché a Mike Ditka dar una charla en un evento de Caballeros de Colón.  Cita a una de las monjas que le enseñaron en la escuela primaria, y todavía lo recordaba después de todos estos años. “Ayer es historia. Mañana es un misterio. Hoy es un regalo, por eso lo llaman el presente”.

Aprende del pasado. Planea para el futuro. Pero vive en el presente.
