Beloved:
Is anyone among you suffering?
He should pray.
Is anyone in good spirits?
He should sing a song of praise.
Is anyone among you sick?
He should summon the presbyters of the Church,
and they should pray over him
and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
The prayer of faith will save the sick person,
and the Lord will raise him up.
If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another
and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.
Elijah was a man like us;
yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain,
and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land.
Then Elijah prayed again, and the sky gave rain
and the earth produced its fruit.
My brothers and sisters,
if anyone among you should stray from the truth
and someone bring him back,
he should know that whoever brings back a sinner
from the error of his way will save his soul from death
and will cover a multitude of sins.

Today the Church remembers St. Mary Magdalene De’ Pazzi (1566 – 1607 AD). She was given the name Caterina (Catherine) at birth and was raised in Florence, Italy. She felt the loving presence of God from an early age as her mother taught her mental prayer. She joined the Carmelites and took the name Mary Magdalene. She had many mystical experiences with Jesus, but more importantly she served her sisters at Carmel with grace and perseverance. She is a great example for us to serve the Lord in humility and grace.
In the reading today from St. James, we hear the foundational words of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. “Is there anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the Church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.”
St. James is writing about sending for the priests to anoint the sick. Every time I read this as I anoint someone, I am humbled to be a part of this calling. To think priests have done this since biblical times amazes me! We do exactly what St. James writes. We pray in silence over the person who is ill and then we anoint their foreheads and the palms of their hands.
Sometimes I have seen miraculous physical healings. More often, spiritual healing takes place in the heart of the sick person and others who are present. I remember my stepmom telling me how much peace she felt when I anointed her before her brain surgery several years ago. She said she felt much peace and entered the surgery with peace of mind.
Anointing of the sick is reserved to priests and bishops because it includes the forgiveness of sins. If someone is able to go to confession, it is good to include confession with this Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. If someone is unable to go to confession, we can give the sick person the “Apostolic Blessing”, which is a special blessing preparing the person to see God face to face.
St. James says, “The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.” I remember praying for the sick and doubting whether God heard my prayers. After seeing some amazing healings, God has taught me to pray with faith. Elijah prayed with faith and God listened to his prayers.

Santiago 5, 13-20
Hermanos míos: ¿Sufre alguno de ustedes? Que haga oración. ¿Está de buen humor? Que entone cantos al Señor. ¿Hay alguno enfermo? Que llame a los presbíteros de la Iglesia, para que oren por él y lo unjan con aceite, invocando al Señor. La oración hecha con fe le dará la salud al enfermo y el Señor hará que se levante; y si tiene pecados, se le perdonarán.
Por lo tanto, confiesen sus pecados los unos a los otros y oren los unos por los otros para que se curen. Mucho puede la oración insistente del justo: Elías era un hombre igual a nosotros, y cuando oró con insistencia para que no lloviera, no llovió en tres años y medio; volvió a orar, y el cielo dio su lluvia, y la tierra, sus cosechas.
Hermanos míos, si alguno de ustedes se desvía de la verdad y otro lo hace volver al buen camino, tengan presente que quien hace volver a un pecador de su extravío, salvará su propia alma de la muerte y sepultará una multitud de pecados.

Hoy la Iglesia recuerda a Santa María Magdalena De’ Pazzi (1566 – 1607 d.C.). Le dieron el nombre de Caterina al nacer y se crió en Florencia, Italia. Sintió la presencia amorosa de Dios desde su juventud cuando su madre le enseñó la oración mental. Se unió a las Carmelitas y tomó el nombre de María Magdalena. Tuvo muchas experiencias místicas con Jesús, pero lo más importante es que sirvió a sus hermanas del Carmelo con gracia y perseverancia. Ella es un gran ejemplo para que sirvamos al Señor con humildad y gracia.
En la lectura de hoy de Santiago, escuchamos las palabras fundamentales del Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos. “¿Hay alguno enfermo? Que llame a los presbíteros de la Iglesia, para que oren por él y lo unjan con aceite, invocando al Señor. La oración hecha con fe le dará la salud al enfermo y el Señor hará que se levante; y si tiene pecados, se le perdonarán.”
Santiago escribe sobre el envío de sacerdotes para ungir a los enfermos. Cada vez que leo esto mientras unjo a alguien, me siento honrado de ser parte de este llamado. ¡Pensar que los sacerdotes han hecho esto desde los tiempos bíblicos me sorprende! Hacemos exactamente lo que escribe St. James. Oramos en silencio sobre la persona que está enferma y luego ungimos su frente y las palmas de sus manos.
A veces he visto sanaciones físicas milagrosas. Más a menudo, la sanación espiritual toma lugar en el corazón de la persona enferma y de otras personas presentes. Recuerdo que mi madrastra me dijo cuánta paz sintió cuando la ungí antes de su cirugía cerebral hace varios años. Dijo que sintió mucha paz y entró al consultorio con tranquilidad.
La unción de los enfermos está reservada a los sacerdotes y obispos porque incluye el perdón de los pecados. Si alguien puede confesarse, es bueno incluir la confesión con este Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos. Si alguien no puede confesarse, podemos darle al enfermo la “Bendición Apostólica”, que es una bendición especial que prepara a la persona para ver a Dios cara a cara.
Santiago dice: “Mucho puede la oración insistente del justo”. Recuerdo orar por los enfermos y dudar de que Dios escuchara mis oraciones. Después de ver algunas sanaciones asombrosas, Dios me enseñó a orar con fe. Elías oró con fe y Dios escuchó sus oraciones.
