Wednesday of Holy Week (April 8, 2020)
Matthew 26:14-25
One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot,
went to the chief priests and said,
“What are you willing to give me
if I hand him over to you?”
They paid him thirty pieces of silver,
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the disciples approached Jesus and said,
“Where do you want us to prepare
for you to eat the Passover?”
He said,
“Go into the city to a certain man and tell him,
‘The teacher says, (My appointed time draws near;
in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.”‘“
The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered,
and prepared the Passover.
When it was evening,
he reclined at table with the Twelve.
And while they were eating, he said,
“Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
Deeply distressed at this,
they began to say to him one after another,
“Surely it is not I, Lord?”
He said in reply,
“He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me
is the one who will betray me.
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply,
“Surely it is not I, Rabbi?”
He answered, “You have said so.”

As spring training finishes and the regular season begins, let’s take a look at what allows us to persevere. In baseball, those chosen in the first round of the draft are often labeled “can’t-miss prospects.” In other words, it does not seem possible that they can fail because they are so talented. Yet, some of these “can’t-miss prospects” never make it to the big leagues. Some have injuries, others have bad luck, and others make bad decisions off the field that affects their play.
Both Judas and Peter were first round draft picks. They were among the first twelve chosen by Jesus. They were “can’t-miss prospects” in Jesus’s eyes. It was not because they were extremely talented, and Jesus knew well their imperfections, but Jesus saw something in them that would be useful to further the mission of the Father. We know that Judas betrayed Jesus and Peter denied Him. Something went wrong with both men. Yet Peter chose the path of forgiveness and now is in the heavenly Hall of Fame. We don’t know if Judas repented from his sin at the last moment, but he despaired and took his own life.
Mike Piazza was drafted at number 1,390 in the 1988 amateur draft, ahead of only five other players. The Dodgers took him as their last pick, only as a favor for Tommy Lasorda, who was friends with Piazza’s father. Mike Piazza went on to become arguably the best hitting catcher of all time and enter the MLB Hall of Fame in 2016.
In Jesus’s eyes, we are all first-round draft picks. We are all God’s beloved sons and daughters. We are all “can’t-miss prospects”. Just as in baseball, everyone has been given different talents. For example, some are given great minds to study theology and philosophy. Others are given the gift to preach or to teach. Others have the gift of hospitality or music. Some may think God hasn’t given them amazing talents like others. However, God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called. I love the portrayal of the apostles in the series “The Chosen”. They each have their gifts and they each have their faults, but Jesus called each of them to be key members of His Church to further the Kingdom of God.
God has given us all that we need to be spiritual Hall of Famers. Jesus died on the cross to rescue us from sin. He offers us abundant grace to enlighten our minds and strengthen our wills. He has given us the Church, the Scriptures and the Sacraments to guide us. We do not have to be super talented. I remember when the major league personnel told me, “You do everything well, but nothing great”. I thought I had what it took to play in the Major Leagues, but they disagreed. The Lord has different standards. We are precious in His eyes and we all have what it takes to make it to heaven. The Lord asks us to be humble and surrender our hearts and minds to Him. When we allow Him to work through us, amazing things can happen.
Do not compare yourself to others. Comparing leads to despairing because there is always someone better than us in every category. You are precious in the eyes of God, just like Judas and Peter. Peter made many errors along the way. It looked like he would not make it to the Hall of Fame at many points along his career path, but he chose mercy and surrender. Judas went down the path of selfishness and despair.
Which path will you take?
Do I believe that I am precious in God’s eyes, a “can’t-miss prospect” for the heavenly Hall of Fame?
Do I avail myself to the helps (Eucharist, confession, Scripture, grace) that God offers me to be holy?

En aquel tiempo, uno de los Doce, llamado Judas Iscariote, fue a ver a los sumos sacerdotes y les dijo: “¿Cuánto me dan si les entrego a Jesús?” Ellos quedaron en darle treinta monedas de plata. Y desde ese momento andaba buscando una oportunidad para entregárselo.
El primer día de la fiesta de los panes Ázimos, los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron: “¿Dónde quieres que te preparemos la cena de Pascua?” Él respondió: “Vayan a la ciudad, a casa de fulano y díganle: ‘El Maestro dice: Mi hora está ya cerca. Voy a celebrar la Pascua con mis discípulos en tu casa’ “. Ellos hicieron lo que Jesús les había ordenado y prepararon la cena de Pascua.
Al atardecer, se sentó a la mesa con los Doce, y mientras cenaban, les dijo: “Yo les aseguro que uno de ustedes va a entregarme”. Ellos se pusieron muy tristes y comenzaron a preguntarle uno por uno: “¿Acaso soy yo, Señor?” Él respondió: “El que moja su pan en el mismo plato que yo, ése va a entregarme. Porque el Hijo del hombre va a morir, como está escrito de él; pero ¡ay de aquel por quien el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado! Más le valiera a ese hombre no haber nacido”. Entonces preguntó Judas, el que lo iba a entregar: “¿Acaso soy yo, Maestro?” Jesús le respondió: “Tú lo has dicho”.

A medida que termina el entrenamiento de primavera y comienza la temporada regular, revisemos lo que nos permite perseverar. En béisbol, los elegidos en la primera ronda de la selección a menudo son etiquetados como “prospectos que no pueden perder”. En otras palabras, no parece posible que puedan fallar porque tienen tanto talento. Sin embargo, algunos de estos prospectos “que no pueden perder” nunca llegan a la liga mayor. Algunos tienen lesiones, otros tienen mala suerte y otros toman malas decisiones fuera del campo que afectan su desempeño en el juego.
Tanto Judas como Peter fueron entre los primeros doce elegidos por Jesús. Eran “prospectos que no pueden perderse” a los ojos de Jesús. No era porque fueran extremadamente talentosos, y Jesús conocía bien sus imperfecciones, pero Jesús vio algo en ellos que sería útil para promover la misión del Padre. Sabemos que Judas traicionó a Jesús y Pedro lo negó. Algo salió mal con ambos hombres. Sin embargo, Pedro eligió el camino del perdón y ahora está en el Salón de la Fama celestial. No sabemos si Judas se arrepintió de su pecado en el último momento, pero se desesperó y se quitó la vida.

A los ojos de Jesús, todos estamos en la selección de la primera ronda. Todos somos hijos e hijas amados/as de Dios Padre. Todos somos prospectos “que no se pueden perder”. Al igual que en el béisbol, a todos se les han dado diferentes talentos. Por ejemplo, a algunos se les da una gran inteligencia para estudiar teología y filosofía. Otros reciben el don de predicar o enseñar. Otros tienen el don de la hospitalidad o la música. Algunos pueden pensar que Dios no les ha dado talentos increíbles como otros. Sin embargo, Dios no llama al talentoso, Él da talentos al llamado. Me encanta la representación de los apóstoles en la serie “Los Elegidos” (“The Chosen”). Cada uno de ellos tiene sus dones y cada uno tiene sus defectos, pero Jesús llamó a cada uno de ellos a ser miembros claves de Su Iglesia para promover el Reino de Dios.
Dios nos ha dado todo lo que necesitamos para ser miembros espirituales del Salón de la Fama. Jesús murió en la cruz para rescatarnos del pecado. Él nos ofrece abundante gracia para iluminar nuestras mentes y fortalecer nuestras voluntades. Él nos ha dado a la Iglesia, las Escrituras y los Sacramentos para guiarnos. No tenemos que ser súper talentosos. Recuerdo cuando los personas de la Liga Mayor me dijeron: “Haces todo bien, pero nada de un nivel muy alto”. Pensé que tenía lo que se necesitaba para jugar en la Liga Mayor, pero no estaban de acuerdo. El Señor tiene diferentes normas. Somos preciosos a Sus ojos y todos tenemos lo que se necesita para llegar al cielo. El Señor nos pide que seamos humildes y entreguemos nuestros corazones y mentes a Él. Cuando le permitimos trabajar a través de nosotros, pueden suceder cosas asombrosas.
No te compares con los demás. La comparación lleva a la desesperación porque siempre hay alguien mejor que nosotros en todas las categorías. Eres precioso a los ojos de Dios, al igual que Judas y Pedro. Pedro cometió muchos errores en el camino. Parecía que no llegaría al Salón de la Fama en muchos momentos de su trayectoria profesional, pero eligió la misericordia y la rendición. Judas siguió el camino del egoísmo y desesperación.
¿Cuál camino tomarás?
¿Creo que soy precioso a los ojos de Dios, una “perspectiva que no se puede perder” para el Salón de la Fama celestial?
¿Aprovecho las ayudas (Eucaristía, confesión, Escritura, gracia) que Dios me ofrece para ser santo?
