September 21, 2023 – Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
Matthew 9:9-13
As Jesus passed by,
he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed him.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners came
and sat with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples,
“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
He heard this and said,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
Go and learn the meaning of the words,
I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

Today the Church remembers St. Matthew. Matthew was probably despised by many of his fellow Jews because he collected taxes for the Romans. Many people suspected that tax collectors also kept some of the tax money for themselves. I think Jesus chose Matthew to turn the world upside down. He came to show that His mercy had no limits. He came to show that even tax collectors could be redeemed. More than redeemed; a tax collector could be a chosen apostle to share the Good News with the world. Jesus called sinners like Matthew and the woman caught in adultery and completely changed their lives. Jesus saw something in Matthew that nobody else saw, maybe not even Matthew. Jesus sees a treasure inside each one of us, even if we do not see it. God loves us and has a great plan for our life. (see Jeremiah 29:11)
Jesus also looked for people with passion. Matthew had a lot of passion, but it was misguided in the area of collecting taxes. Jesus invited Matthew to direct his passion into becoming His disciple and to saving souls. Then the Lord did amazing things through Matthew. Jesus wants to direct our passions and talents toward doing great things for God the Father. I remember asking my spiritual director if it was permissible to have ambition as a Christian. He said, “As long as you direct all your energy and efforts toward Jesus and the salvation of souls, it is good. Many of the saints had ambition to do great things for the Lord.”
Jesus calls you and me as well, sinners though we are, to be His disciples (followers) and apostles (ones who are sent). You may say, “Not me. I’m not worthy of the Lord’s love and call.” Matthew might have thought the same thing. Caravaggio painted “The Calling of St. Matthew.” It is one of my favorite paintings as you can see the surprised look on Matthew’s face as our Lord calls him. Nothing is impossible with God. Jesus wants to work miracles in your life and mine as well. He calls us sinners to repent from our sins, turn our lives toward Him, and then go out to share what we have received with others.
No one is truly worthy to be called by Christ. However, there is a saying, “God does not call the equipped, but He equips the called.” As we see with Matthew, God often calls those who are least likely to be called according to worldly standards. Jesus did not come for the perfect; He came for the sick. The Church is a field hospital for the sick. We would not need a savior or a Church if we were all perfect and could save ourselves. God wants to meet you where you are, love you, and then call you to greatness.
How did the other disciples feel about Matthew? “The Chosen” does a great job of showing how they might look at this tax collector as their enemy. Somehow, through the power of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, these men came together as a team and changed the world. The next time you feel tempted to judge another person, think about St. Matthew. God sees the treasure in each person. Lord, help me to see every person like you see them.
Have I experienced the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ?
If so, have I shared God’s mercy with others?
Am I afraid surrender my whole life to Jesus?
Are my energies and passions directed toward building up God’s kingdom?
Matthew dropped everything and followed Jesus. Thank God he did. Jesus also is saying to you, “Follow me.” What is keeping you from following the Lord with your whole heart, mind, and soul?

En aquel tiempo, Jesús vio a un hombre llamado Mateo, sentado a su mesa de recaudador de impuestos, y le dijo: “Sígueme”. Él se levantó y lo siguió.
Después, cuando estaba a la mesa en casa de Mateo, muchos publicanos y pecadores se sentaron también a comer con Jesús y sus discípulos. Viendo esto, los fariseos preguntaron a los discípulos: “¿Por qué su Maestro come con publicanos y pecadores?” Jesús los oyó y les dijo: “No son los sanos los que necesitan de médico, sino los enfermos. Vayan, pues, y aprendan lo que significa: Yo quiero misericordia y no sacrificios. Yo no he venido a llamar a los justos, sino a los pecadores”.

Hoy la Iglesia recuerda a San Mateo. Mateo, probablemente, fue despreciado por muchos de sus compañeros judíos porque recogía impuestos para los romanos. Mucha gente sospechaba que los recaudadores de impuestos también se quedaban con una parte del dinero de impuestos para sí mismos. Creo que Jesús eligió a Mateo para poner al mundo de cabeza. Él vino a demostrar que Su misericordia no tenía límites. El vino para mostrar que incluso los publicanos podrían ser redimidos. Más que redimidos; un publicano podría ser un apóstol escogido para compartir la Buena Nueva con el mundo. Jesús también buscaba a personas con pasión. Mateo tenía mucha pasión, pero fue mal guiado en el área de recaudación de impuestos. Jesús invitó a Mateo a dirigir su pasión para convertirse en Su discípulo y para salvar almas. Luego el Señor hizo cosas increíbles a través de Mateo. Jesús quiere dirigir nuestras pasiones y talentos a hacer grandes cosas para Dios Padre. Recuerdo haberle preguntado a mi director espiritual si era permisible tener ambición como cristiano. Dijo: “Mientras dirijas toda tu energía y esfuerzos hacia Jesús y la salvación de las almas, es bueno. Muchos de los santos tenían la ambición de hacer grandes cosas por el Señor”.
Jesús también te llama a ti y a mí, aunque somos pecadores, para ser Sus discípulos (seguidores) y apóstoles (los que son enviados). Puedes decir: “Yo no. No soy digno del amor y la llamada del Señor.” Mateo podría haber pensado lo mismo. Caravaggio pintó “El Llamado de San Mateo”. Es una de mis pinturas favoritas, ya que puedes ver la expresión de sorpresa en el rostro de Mateo cuando nuestro Señor lo llama. Con Dios nada es imposible. Jesús quiere hacer milagros en tu vida y en la mía también. Él nos llama, aunque somos pecadores, para que nos arrepintamos de nuestros pecados, cambiemos nuestras vidas y luego salgamos a compartir lo que hemos recibido con los demás.
Nadie es realmente digno de ser llamado por Cristo. Sin embargo, hay un dicho: “Dios no llama al que está equipado, sino que Él equipa al llamado.” Y como vemos con Mateo, Dios a menudo llama a los que son menos propensos a ser llamados de acuerdo con las normas mundanas. Jesús no vino por los perfectos; Él vino por los enfermos. La Iglesia es un hospital en el campo para enfermos. No necesitaríamos un salvador o una Iglesia si todos fuéramos perfectos y pudiéramos salvarnos. Dios quiere encontrarte donde estás, amarte y luego llamarte a la santidad.
¿Cómo se sintieron los otros discípulos acerca de Mateo? “The Chosen” (“Los Escogidos”) hace un gran trabajo al mostrar cómo podrían ver a este recaudador de impuestos como enemigo. De alguna manera, a través del poder de Jesús y el Espíritu Santo, estos hombres se unieron en equipo y cambiaron el mundo. La próxima vez que sienta la tentación de juzgar a otra persona, piense en San Mateo. Dios ve el tesoro en cada persona. Señor, ayúdame a ver a cada persona como Tú la ve.
¿He experimentado la misericordia y la gracia de Jesucristo?
Si es así, ¿he compartido la misericordia de Dios con los demás?
¿Tengo miedo de entregar toda mi vida a Jesús?
¿Están mis energías y pasiones dirigidas hacia edificar el reino de Dios?
Mateo dejó todo y siguió a Jesús. Gracias a Dios que lo hizo. Jesús también te dice a ti: “Sígueme.” ¿Qué te impide seguir al Señor con todo tu corazón, mente y alma?
