April 25, 2024 – Feast of St. Mark the Evangelist

Mark 16:15-20

Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them:
“Go into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved;
whoever does not believe will be condemned.
These signs will accompany those who believe:
in my name they will drive out demons,
they will speak new languages.
They will pick up serpents with their hands,
and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them.
They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them,
was taken up into heaven
and took his seat at the right hand of God.
But they went forth and preached everywhere,
while the Lord worked with them
and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

April 25 is the feast day of St. Mark. He was not one of the original apostles, but he was a disciple of Peter. We hear in the first reading today (1 Peter 5:5-14) Peter refers to Mark as “my son”. I cannot help but feel a connection to Mark through the call to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus told the Eleven, “Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” Today, because of their original apostolic zeal, there are Christians throughout the world. Jesus continues to call you and me, today, in 2024, to “proclaim the Gospel to every creature”. If we don’t pass on the faith to the next generation, who will?

Our faith is not a private venture. Yes, we are called to personal holiness. We need to spend time in personal prayer and study, but we also have a call to bring others to Christ and Christ to others. We cannot become complacent with the best news there ever has been. We have lost the missionary zeal to proclaim the Good News to the world. Every gift that God gives us is not meant for us alone; it is meant to be given away.

Think of a good movie that you have seen recently? How many people have you told about the movie? I have told countless people about the series “The Chosen” because it touches my heart. Why do we share these movies with others? We want them to have a good experience like we have. Why should we share the Good News of Jesus Christ? Not only do we want them to experience the peace and joy we have experienced, but it could be a matter of eternal life or death for them.

In the first reading today from St. Peter, he writes, “Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” There is a spiritual battle raging around us and there are lives at stake. There are many threats and diseases that can take our physical lives, but we need to worry more about our eternal souls. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.”

During the funeral homily for Cardinal George in 2015, Archbishop Peter Sartain quoted Cardinal George as saying, “The only thing we take with us when we die is what we have given away.” This is the Gospel message.  Jesus told us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.” (Mark 8:35)

It takes maturity to give your life away to someone or for a cause. Immature people only think about themselves. How do we mature as Christians? Just as children grow and mature better when they know they are loved by their parents; we grow and mature spiritually through prayer and accepting our identity as beloved children of God. The more we grow into this identity, the more we mature and become ready to give our lives away. If we never mature, we will remain spiritual adolescents forever. How often do we see selfish decisions being made all around us because of immaturity?

St. Mark took the Lord’s words to heart and gave everything away for Jesus.  Cardinal George took these words to heart and gave everything for the Lord. Countless saints and martyrs have followed this path of Jesus of self-emptying love, only to receive the fullness of life in heaven. You and I are called to this same pattern of life.

Do you spend time in prayer growing in your identity as a beloved child of God?

Do you see yourself as an apostle, one who is sent to spread the Gospel?

Are you a mature Christian, ready to give your life away for Jesus and for others?

25 de abril 2024 – Fiesta de San Marcos, Evangelista

Marcos 16:15-20

En aquel tiempo, se apareció Jesús a los Once y les dijo: “Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda creatura. El que crea y se bautice, se salvará; el que se resista a creer, será condenado. Éstos son los milagros que acompañarán a los que hayan creído: arrojarán demonios en mi nombre, hablarán lenguas nuevas, cogerán serpientes en sus manos, y si beben un veneno mortal, no les hará daño; impondrán las manos a los enfermos y éstos quedarán sanos”.

El Señor Jesús, después de hablarles, subió al cielo y está sentado a la derecha de Dios. Ellos fueron y proclamaron el Evangelio por todas partes, y el Señor actuaba con ellos y confirmaba su predicación con los milagros que hacían.

El 25 de abril es el día festivo de San Marcos. No fue uno de los apóstoles originales, pero fue un discípulo de Pedro. Oímos en la primera lectura de hoy (1 Pedro 5, 5-14) Pedro se refiere a Marcos como “mi hijo”. No puedo dejar de sentir una conexión con Marcos a través del llamado a difundir el Evangelio de Jesucristo. Jesús les dijo a los Once, “Vayan por el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda creatura.” Hoy en día, debido a su celo apostólico original, hay cristianos por todo el mundo. Jesús continúa llamándote a ti y a mí, hoy, en el 2024, para “predicar el Evangelio a toda creatura”. Si no transmitimos la fe a la próxima generación, ¿quién lo hará?


Nuestra fe no es una aventura privada. Sí, estamos llamados a la santidad personal. Necesitamos pasar tiempo en la oración personal y el estudio, pero también tenemos un llamado para traer a otros a Cristo y Cristo a los otros.  No podemos ser complacientes con las mejores noticias que hayan habido. Hemos perdido el celo misionero para anunciar la Buena Nueva al mundo. Cada don que Dios nos da no está destinado sólo para nosotros; está destinado a ser regalado.

¿Piensa en una buena película que haya visto recientemente? ¿A cuántas personas les has contado sobre la película? Le he contado a innumerables personas sobre la serie “The Chosen” (los elegidos) porque toca mi corazón. ¿Por qué compartimos estas películas con otros? Queremos que tengan una buena experiencia como la nuestra. ¿Por qué deberíamos compartir las buenas nuevas de Jesucristo? No solo queremos que experimenten la paz y la alegría que hemos experimentado, sino que podría ser una cuestión de vida eterna o muerte para ellos.

En la primera lectura de hoy de San Pedro, escribe: “Sé sobrio y vigilante. Tu oponente, el Diablo, ronda como un león rugiente buscando a alguien a quien devorar.”  Hay una batalla espiritual a nuestro alrededor y hay vidas en juego. Ciertamente, hay muchas amenazas y enfermedades que pueden acabar con nuestra vida física, pero debemos preocuparnos más por nuestras almas eternas. “No temas a los que matan el cuerpo pero no pueden matar el alma; más bien, tenga miedo de quien puede destruir el alma y el cuerpo en Gehenna.”


Durante la homilía del funeral del Cardenal George, el arzobispo Peter Sartain dijo una cita del Cardenal George diciendo: “Lo único que nos llevamos con nosotros cuando morimos es lo que hemos regalado.” Este es el mensaje del Evangelio. Jesús nos dijo: “Porque el que quiera salvar su vida la perderá, pero quien pierda su vida por mí y por el Evangelio, la salvará.” (Marcos 8, 35)

Se necesita madurez para entregar tu vida a alguien o por una causa. Las personas inmaduras solo piensan en sí mismas. ¿Cómo maduramos como cristianos?  Así como los niños crecen y maduran mejor cuando saben que sus padres los quieren; crecemos y maduramos espiritualmente a través de la oración y aceptando nuestra identidad como amados hijos de Dios. Cuanto más nos convertimos en esta identidad, más maduramos y nos preparamos para entregar nuestras vidas. Si nunca maduramos, seguiremos siendo adolescentes espirituales para siempre. ¿Con qué frecuencia vemos que se toman decisiones egoístas a nuestro alrededor como resultado de la inmadurez?


San Marcos tomó las palabras de Jesús de corazón y lo dio todo por Jesús. El Cardenal George tomó estas palabras de corazón y lo dio todo por el Señor. Innumerables santos y mártires han seguido este camino de Jesús de amor que se vacía a sí mismo, solo para recibir la plenitud de la vida en el cielo. Tú y yo estamos llamados a este mismo patrón de vida.



¿Pasas tiempo en oración creciendo en tu identidad como un hijo amado de Dios?

¿Te ves como un apóstol, alguien que es enviado a difundir el Evangelio?
¿Eres un cristiano maduro, listo para dar tu vida por Jesús y por los demás?
