April 24, 2024 – Wednesday of the 4th Week of Easter

Acts 12:24-13:5a

The word of God continued to spread and grow.

After Barnabas and Saul completed their relief mission,
they returned to Jerusalem,
taking with them John, who is called Mark.

Now there were in the Church at Antioch prophets and teachers:
Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,
Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
“Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul
for the work to which I have called them.”
Then, completing their fasting and prayer,
they laid hands on them and sent them off.

So they, sent forth by the Holy Spirit,
went down to Seleucia
and from there sailed to Cyprus.
When they arrived in Salamis,
they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.

Have you ever asked yourself some of the big questions of life?

Where do I come from?

Where am I going?

What is my purpose in life?

As I started reflecting on these questions in high school, college and after college, I began to realize that God is the answer to all these questions. I come from God and return to God. My purpose in this life is to help others to know God so that they can live with Him for all eternity. This is my passion and purpose. It is what motivates me when I wake up and what I reflect upon as I go to sleep. What are your answers to these questions?

We read in the Acts of the Apostles how so many people found their purpose in life when they encountered the Holy Spirit, after hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ preached through the Apostles and other disciples. Today we read about the Christian community in Antioch praying and fasting, two essential components to help us discern the voice of the Lord. Then they laid hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them forth to preach the Word of God.

God calls each one of us to be a part of His mission to the world. Not all of us are called to missionary trips to other countries like Barnabas and Saul, but we all are called to be missionary disciples, beginning in our own homes. How do we know when God is speaking to us? We know that the enemies of the soul – the devil, the world, and the flesh – are constantly trying to distract us from hearing the voice of God, our Good Shepherd. How do I discern God’s voice?  Here are a few tips:

  • Prayer – Develop a prayer life in which you are spending time in silence listening to the voice of God. Sheep know the voice of their shepherd because they spend all their time with him.
    • Fasting – Make fasting a part of your spiritual life on a weekly basis. Denying your physical desires opens you up to hearing the voice of God and doing His will.
    • Scripture – Immerse yourself in the Word of God, especially the Gospels. The more you read about what Jesus said and did, the more you will recognize His voice within you.
    • Morality – God never calls you to do anything that is immoral or that goes against God’s law.  You can never say that God is calling you to steal, murder or commit adultery, for example.
    • Persistence – When God calls, He continues to call. He pursues you in love.  The Holy Spirit will not call you once and then disappear. If God wants you to do something, it will surface in many ways.
    • Fruits – The fruits of the Holy Spirit often accompany the voice of God – especially peace and joy.  This does not mean that if you are nervous about the call that it is not from God; however, if you experience peace and joy as you meditate on the call, it is very possible the Holy Spirit is involved.
    • Confirmation – Other people can confirm the call. In my case, after feeling called to the priesthood many people started telling me that I should become a priest. The Lord speaks to you through other people.  Pay attention and listen to the people who know you the best.
    • Gifts – What are your natural gifts and talents? God has given you talents to share with the rest of the world. Ask yourself, “What am I naturally good at doing?” and “What do I enjoy doing?” These two questions point you to the natural gifts God has given you. God often calls us to use these natural gifts to build up His kingdom through evangelization.

    What is my life’s purpose?

    What are the gifts God has given me to use for His glory?

    How have I discerned God’s will for my life?

    Hechos de los Apóstoles 12,24-25.13,1-5

    Mientras tanto, la Palabra de Dios se difundía incesantemente. 


    Bernabé y Saulo, una vez cumplida su misión, volvieron de Jerusalén a Antioquía, llevando consigo a Juan, llamado Marcos. 


    En la Iglesia de Antioquía había profetas y doctores, entre los cuales estaban Bernabé y Simeón, llamado el Negro, Lucio de Cirene, Manahén, amigo de infancia del tetrarca Herodes, y Saulo. Un día, mientras celebraban el culto del Señor y ayunaban, el Espíritu Santo les dijo: “Resérvenme a Saulo y a Bernabé para la obra a la cual los he llamado”. 


    Ellos, después de haber ayunado y orado, les impusieron las manos y los despidieron. Saulo y Bernabé, enviados por el Espíritu Santo, fueron a Seleucia y de allí se embarcaron para Chipre. Al llegar a Salamina anunciaron la Palabra de Dios en las sinagogas de los judíos, y Juan colaboraba con ellos.

    ¿Alguna vez te has preguntado algunas de las grandes preguntas de la vida?

    1) ¿De dónde vengo?

    2) ¿A dónde voy?

    3) ¿Cuál es mi propósito en la vida?

    Cuando comencé a reflexionar sobre estas preguntas en la escuela preparatoria, la universidad y después de la universidad, comencé a darme cuenta de que Dios es la respuesta a todas estas preguntas. Vengo de Dios y vuelvo a Dios. Mi propósito en esta vida es ayudar a otros a conocer a Dios para que puedan vivir con Él por toda la eternidad. Esta es mi pasión y propósito. Es lo que me motiva cuando me despierto y sobre lo que reflexiono mientras duermo. ¿Cuáles son sus respuestas a estas preguntas?

    Leemos en los Hechos de los Apóstoles cómo tantas personas encontraron su propósito en la vida cuando encontraron el Espíritu Santo, después de escuchar la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo predicada por medio de los Apóstoles y otros discípulos. Hoy leemos acerca de la comunidad cristiana en Antioquía orando y ayunando, dos componentes esenciales para ayudarnos a discernir la voz del Señor. Luego pusieron las manos sobre Bernabé y Saulo y los enviaron a predicar la Palabra de Dios.

    Dios nos llama a cada uno de nosotros a ser parte de su misión al mundo. No todos estamos llamados a viajes misioneros a otros países como Bernabé y Saúl, pero todos estamos llamados a ser discípulos misioneros, comenzando en nuestro propio hogar. ¿Cómo sabemos cuándo Dios nos está hablando? Sabemos que los enemigos del alma – el diablo, el mundo y la carne – están constantemente tratando de distraernos de escuchar la voz de Dios, nuestro Buen Pastor. ¿Cómo puedo discernir la voz de Dios?  Aquí están algunas sugerencias:

    • Oración: Desarrolla una vida de oración en la que pases tiempo en silencio escuchando la voz de Dios. Las ovejas conocen la voz de su pastor porque pasan todo su tiempo con él.
      • Ayuno: haz del ayuno una parte de tu vida espiritual semanalmente. Negar tus deseos físicos te abre a escuchar la voz de Dios y a hacer Su voluntad.
      • Escrituras – Sumérgete en la Palabra de Dios, especialmente en los Evangelios. Cuanto más leas acerca de lo que Jesús dijo e hizo, más reconocerás Su voz dentro de ti.
      • Moralidad – Dios nunca te llama a hacer nada que sea inmoral o que vaya en contra de la ley de Dios.  Nunca se puede decir que Dios te está llamando a robar, asesinar o cometer adulterio, por ejemplo.
      • Persistencia – Cuando Dios llama, continúa llamando. Te persigue en el amor.  El Espíritu Santo no los llamará una vez y luego desaparecerá. Si Dios quiere que hagas algo, aparecerá de muchas maneras.
      • Frutos: Los frutos del Espíritu Santo a menudo acompañan la voz del Señor, especialmente la paz y la alegría. Esto no significa que si estás nervioso por el llamado, no es de Dios; sin embargo, si experimenta paz y alegría al meditar en el llamado, es muy posible que el Espíritu Santo esté involucrado.  
      • Confirmación – Otras personas pueden confirmar el llamado. En mi caso, después de sentirme llamado al sacerdocio, muchas personas comenzaron a decirme que debía ser sacerdote. El Señor te habla a través de otras personas.  Presta atención y escucha a las personas que te conocen mejor.
      • Dones – ¿Cuáles son sus dones y talentos naturales?  Dios te ha dado talentos para compartir con el resto del mundo.  Pregúntate: “¿Naturalmente cuáles son mis dones?” y “¿Qué es lo que disfruto hacer?”  Estas dos preguntas te señalan a los dones naturales que Dios te ha dado. Dios a menudo nos llama a utilizar estos dones naturales para edificar Su reino a través de la evangelización.

      ¿Cuál es el propósito de mi vida?

      ¿Cuáles son los dones que Dios me ha dado para usarlos para Su gloria?

      ¿Cómo he discernido la voluntad de Dios para mi vida?
