April 23, 2024 – Tuesday of the 4th Week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 11:19-26

Those who had been scattered by the persecution
that arose because of Stephen
went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch,
preaching the word to no one but Jews.
There were some Cypriots and Cyrenians among them, however,
who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks as well,
proclaiming the Lord Jesus.
The hand of the Lord was with them
and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.
The news about them reached the ears of the Church in Jerusalem,
and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch.
When he arrived and saw the grace of God,
he rejoiced and encouraged them all
to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart,
for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.
And a large number of people was added to the Lord.
Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch.
For a whole year they met with the Church
and taught a large number of people,
and it was in Antioch that the disciples
were first called Christians.

This reading from the Acts of the Apostles highlights why I enjoy this book of the Bible so much. The enthusiasm of the early Christians is contagious. Jesus is the best news ever! He conquered death, which is way more powerful than anything on the evening news. The apostles kept their focus on our Lord Jesus Christ and spreading the Good News. They encouraged one another continuously and their numbers grew because of their efforts.

When Stephen was martyred and the Christians were persecuted, they scattered to different towns. At first, the followers of Jesus preached only to the Jews, but some of the Christians began sharing their faith with the Greeks, and many of them came to believe in Jesus. The Church, which had started to form and was centered in Jerusalem, heard about the evangelization, so they sent Barnabas to Antioch to check out what was happening with these new Greek Christians.  He rejoiced when he saw the grace of God at work, and he encouraged them to stay faithful to Jesus.

Then Barnabas went to find Paul in Tarsus to bring him back to Antioch to help form these new Christians. Together they spent one year teaching the new disciples and it was here that they were first called “Christians”. It had to be so exciting for them to watch the faith grow so dramatically in these early years!

As I look at how the early Church grew, I think we can learn so much about how we are called to do the same today:

  1. ENCOUNTER – They preached the Kerygma, the basic Gospel message to people.
  2. God loves you.
  3. Sin separates us from God.
  4. Jesus came to redeem us by dying on the cross.
  5. They asked people for a response.
    • Repent from your sins.
    • Be baptized.
    • Receive and live in the Holy Spirit.

GROW – They formed the new converts through the teaching of the apostles, prayer, and by forming community and living with them for one year.

EQUIP – They equipped the growing disciples with what they needed to share the Gospel with others.

GO – They sent the new apostles (ones who are sent) to make new disciples in the same manner they became disciples of Jesus.

Has anyone ever discipled me?

Have I had a personal encounter with Jesus through hearing the Gospel preached?

Am I growing in faith by learning how to pray and learning more about my faith?

Have I been equipped for mission?

Am I currently making disciples?

Let us keep ablaze the same fire that burned deeply in the hearts of the early disciples. It takes time and energy to foster our relationship with Christ, but there is nothing more important that you will ever do in your life.

Hechos de los Apóstoles 11, 19-26

En aquellos días, algunos de los que se habían dispersado, huyendo de la persecución desatada después de la muerte de Esteban, llegaron hasta Fenicia, Chipre y Antioquía; pero predicaban el Evangelio solamente a los judíos. Sin embargo, hubo entre ellos algunos chipriotas y cirenenses, que al llegar a Antioquía, comenzaron a dirigirse también a los griegos y a predicarles el Evangelio del Señor Jesús. Y como la mano del Señor estaba con ellos, muchos se convirtieron y abrazaron la fe.

Cuando llegaron estas noticias a la comunidad cristiana de Jerusalén, Bernabé fue enviado a Antioquía. Llegó Bernabé, y viendo la acción de la gracia de Dios, se alegró mucho; y como era hombre bueno, lleno del Espíritu Santo y de fe, exhortó a todos a que, firmes en su propósito, permanecieran fieles al Señor. Así se ganó para el Señor una gran muchedumbre.

Entonces Bernabé partió hacia Tarso, en busca de Saulo; y cuando lo encontró, lo llevó consigo a Antioquía. Ambos vivieron durante todo un año en esa comunidad y enseñaron a mucha gente. Allí, en Antioquía, fue donde por primera vez los discípulos recibieron el nombre de “cristianos”.

Esta lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles demuestra por qué disfruto tanto este libro de la Biblia. El entusiasmo de los primeros cristianos es contagioso.¡Jesús es la mejor noticia! Conquistó la muerte, que es mucho más poderosa que cualquier cosa en las noticias de la noche. Los apóstoles mantuvieron su enfoque en nuestro Señor Jesucristo y difundieron la Buena Nueva. Ellos se alentaron uno a otro continuamente y el número creció debido a sus esfuerzos.
  


Cuando Esteban fue martirizado y los cristianos fueron perseguidos, se dispersaron por diferentes ciudades. Al principio, los seguidores de Jesús predicaban solo a los judíos, pero algunos de los cristianos comenzaron a compartir su fe con los griegos, y muchos llegaron a creer en Jesús. La Iglesia, que había comenzado a formarse y estaba centrada en Jerusalén, se enteró de la evangelización, por lo que enviaron a Bernabé a Antioquía para ver qué estaba pasando con estos nuevos cristianos griegos. Se regocijó cuando vio la gracia de Dios en el trabajo y los alentó a mantenerse fieles a Jesús.

Luego Bernabé fue a buscar a Pablo en Tarso para traerlo de vuelta a Antioquía para ayudar a formar a estos nuevos cristianos. Juntos pasaron tiempo enseñando a los nuevos discípulos y fue aquí donde primero se les llamó “cristianos”. ¡Tuvo que ser tan emocionante para ellos ver la fe crecer tan dramáticamente en estos primeros años!

Al mirar cómo creció la Iglesia primitiva, creo que podemos aprender mucho sobre cómo estamos llamados a hacer lo mismo hoy:

1) ENCUENTRO – Predicaron el Kerygma, el mensaje básico del Evangelio a las personas.

a. Dios te ama.

b. El pecado nos separa de Dios.

c. Jesús vino a redimirnos muriendo en la cruz.

d. Ellos le pidieron a la gente una respuesta.

                               1. Arrepiéntete de tus pecados.

                               2. Se bautizado

                               3. Recibe y vive en el Espíritu Santo.

2) CRECER – Formaron a los nuevos conversos a través de la enseñanza de los apóstoles, la oración y formando comunidad y viviendo con ellos durante un año.

3) PREPARAR O EQUIPAR – Prepararon/Equiparon a los discípulos en crecimiento con lo que necesitaban para compartir el Evangelio con otros.

4) IR – Enviaron a los nuevos apóstoles (los que son enviados) para hacer nuevos discípulos de la misma manera que se convirtieron en discípulos de Jesús.

¿Alguien me ha discipulado alguna vez?

¿He tenido un encuentro personal con Jesús al escuchar la predicación del Evangelio?

¿Estoy creciendo en la fe aprendiendo a orar y aprendiendo más sobre mi fe?

¿He sido equipado para la misión?

¿Estoy haciendo discípulos actualmente?

Mantengamos el mismo fuego que ardió profundamente en los corazones de los primeros discípulos. Se necesita tiempo y energía para fomentar nuestra relación con Cristo, pero no hay nada más importante que puedas hacer en tu vida.
