Thought for Thursday, 28th Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 11:47-54

The Lord said:
“Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets
whom your fathers killed.
Consequently, you bear witness and give consent
to the deeds of your ancestors,
for they killed them and you do the building.
Therefore, the wisdom of God said,
‘I will send to them prophets and Apostles;
some of them they will kill and persecute’
in order that this generation might be charged
with the blood of all the prophets
shed since the foundation of the world,
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah
who died between the altar and the temple building.
Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood!
Woe to you, scholars of the law!
You have taken away the key of knowledge.
You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.”
When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees
began to act with hostility toward him
and to interrogate him about many things,
for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

I have been visiting our seminarians at St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, MN.  I am always inspired by their energy and zeal for Christ!  I return home on Thursday afternoon.  Please pray for safe travels.

Reading this Gospel today reminds me of what is happening here in our country as we try to push God and Jesus Christ out of everything.

Jesus was reminding the Jewish leaders that some of their ancestors killed the prophets that God sent among them.  And now they were going to reject the Prophet of all Prophets – the Son of God Himself!  He accuses the “scholars of the law” of taking the “key” away for others to enter the Kingdom of God.  Jesus obviously is the “key”.

What is happening here in the United States, a country founded on our Christian beliefs?  We are taking Jesus out of everything for the sake of being inclusive.  Or some see Christians as a threat to their agenda.  In actuality we are excluding the “key” of salvation.

Now, I understand the separation of Church and state.  But as we are finishing our government shutdown, we need God and godly values more than ever!  Our unborn children need protection.  Marriage needs to be protected.  The dignity of every human person needs to be protected.

What can we do?

I encourage you to pray as a family when you go to a restaurant.  Last weekend I was eating at a Wendy’s restaurant and I saw a couple make the sign of the cross, bow their heads and pray.  As I was leaving, I thanked them for praying in public and not being ashamed.  They responded by saying, “No, Father, we are not afraid to pray in public.  We are very Catholic and proud of it!”  We need more people like them to take a stand for Jesus.

Don’t be afraid to speak the truth.  This may mean going on the March for Life in Washington.  Pray for the protection of life in all forms.

We may undergo persecution for our beliefs.  We may be called names.  That is okay.  Consider the price Jesus paid for speaking the truth…  May we not be ashamed of Jesus, the Son of God.  May we share His name as the “key” to all joy, life and happiness.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los fariseos y doctores de la ley: “¡Ay de ustedes, que les construyen sepulcros a los profetas que los padres de ustedes asesinaron! Con eso dan a entender que están de acuerdo con lo que sus padres hicieron, pues ellos los mataron y ustedes les construyen el sepulcro.

Por eso dijo la sabiduría de Dios: Yo les mandaré profetas y apóstoles, y los matarán y los perseguirán, para que así se le pida cuentas a esta generación de la sangre de todos los profetas que ha sido derramada desde la creación del mundo, desde la sangre de Abel hasta la de Zacarías, que fue asesinado entre el atrio y el altar. Sí, se lo repito: a esta generación se le pedirán cuentas.

¡Ay de ustedes, doctores de la ley, porque han guardado la llave de la puerta del saber! Ustedes no han entrado, y a los que iban a entrar les han cerrado el paso’’.

Luego que Jesús salió de allí, los escribas y fariseos comenzaron a acosarlo terriblemente con muchas preguntas y a ponerle trampas para ver si podían acusarlo con alguna de sus propias palabras.

Al leer este Evangelio de hoy me recuerda a lo que está ocurriendo aquí en nuestro país mientras tratamos de empujar a Dios y a Jesucristo fuera de todo.

Jesús les estaba recordando a los líderes judíos que algunos de sus antepasados mataron a los profetas que Dios envió entre ellos. Y ahora iban a rechazar al Profeta de todos los Profetas – ¡el Hijo de Dios mismo! Acusa a los “doctores de la ley” de guardar la “llave” para que otros no puedan entrar en el Reino de Dios. Jesús, obviamente, es la “llave”.

¿Qué está pasando aquí en los Estados Unidos, un país fundado sobre nuestras creencias cristianas? Estamos quitando a Jesús de todo por el bien de ser incluyentes. O algunos ven a los cristianos como una amenaza a su agenda. En la actualidad estamos excluyendo la “llave” de la salvación.

Ahora, entiendo la separación de Iglesia y el Estado. ¡Pero mientras estamos terminando nuestro cierre del gobierno, necesitamos a Dios y los valores divinos más que nunca! Nuestros niños no nacidos necesitan protección. El matrimonio necesita ser protegido. La dignidad de cada persona humana necesita ser protegida.

¿Qué podemos hacer?

Los animo a orar en familia cuando vayan a un restaurante. El fin de semana pasado estaba comiendo en un restaurante de Wendy’s y vi a una pareja hacer la señal de la cruz, inclinaron la cabeza y oraron. Cuando ya me iba, les di las gracias por orar en público y no avergonzarse. Ellos respondieron diciendo: “No, Padre, no tenemos miedo de orar en público. Somos muy Católicos y estamos orgullosos de ello”. Necesitamos más personas como ellos de tomar una posición por Jesús.

No tengan miedo de decir la verdad. Esto puede significar ir a la Marcha por la Vida en Washington. Oren por la protección de la vida en todas las formas.

Podemos sufrir persecución por nuestras creencias. Podemos ser llamados por nombres. Eso está bien. Consideren el precio que Jesús pagó por decir la verdad… Que no nos avergoncemos de Jesús, el Hijo de Dios. Que podamos compartir Su nombre como la “llave” para toda la alegría, vida y felicidad.
