LUKE 17:20-25
Asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come,
Jesus said in reply,
“The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed,
and no one will announce, “Look, here it is,” or, “There it is.”
For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you.”
Then he said to his disciples,
“The days will come when you will long to see
one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.
There will be those who will say to you,
“Look, there he is,” or “Look, here he is.”
Do not go off, do not run in pursuit.
For just as lightning flashes
and lights up the sky from one side to the other,
so will the Son of Man be in his day.
But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation.”

Ok in the last week, the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series and Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States. These are both things that we never thought would happen. As we approach the end of the liturgical year (only 2.5 weeks left before we begin Advent), the readings lead us toward contemplating the end times. Here Jesus is asked when the coming of the Kingdom of God would come. We ask the same questions today, don’t we? We look for signs. We want to know the exact date of the end of the world.
Jesus was among them as Emmanuel, God with us. And yet they didn’t recognize Him. They were looking for prodigious signs and yet Jesus told them, “the Kingdom of God is among you.” The Holy Spirit is within us and present all around us. Do we recognize the Holy Spirit today? Do we see the presence of God in our midst?
Many people run off to follow exciting speakers who tell them what they want to hear. Or when someone tells us that the world is going to end on a certain date we run to the stores to stock up on food and water. We despair when we watch the evening news and see the murders, wars and total lack of respect for human life. We allow ourselves to be blown around by the wind because we are not grounded in Jesus Christ.
Yet Jesus tells us, “Do not be afraid.” He asks us to place our complete trust in Him. He promised that He would never abandon us; that He would be with us until the end of the age.
So we are first called to be disciples (followers, students) of Jesus. Then He sends us out to the world to share the Good News as His apostles, to make disciples of all nations. We are called to help others recognize God’s presence in our homes, work places, schools and environments.
Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the answer to all of our ills. He is the only one in which we should place our trust. Don’t allow yourself to be blown about by the changing winds. Don’t build your house upon a weak foundation. Build your house upon Christ, the Rock.
At Mass when the priest elevates the Eucharist, he repeats the words of John the Baptist when he saw Jesus, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” (John 1:29) John was sent to prepare the way of the Lord and he pointed Jesus out to everyone. We too are called to prepare the way of the Lord. We too are called to point Jesus out to our friends, family, neighbors, co-workers – whoever comes to us searching for Jesus.
Do you recognize the presence of Jesus around you?
Do you allow your heart to be troubled by taking your eyes off of Jesus?
Are you willing to point others to Jesus?
Are you taking Jesus into the environments in which you live and work?

Preguntado por los fariseos, cuando el Reino de Dios vendría,
Jesús les contestó:
“La venida del Reino de Dios no se puede observar,

En la semana pasada, Los Cachorros de Chicago han ganado la Serie Mundial y Donald Trump ha sido seleccionado Presidente de los EEUU. Nunca pensamos que las dos cosas iban a pasar. A medida que nos acercamos al final del año litúrgico (sólo 2.5 semanas antes de comenzar el Adviento), las lecturas nos llevan a la contemplación de los últimos tiempos. Aquí a Jesús se le preguntó cuando la venida del Reino de Dios vendría. Nosotros hacemos las mismas preguntas hoy, ¿no? Buscamos señales. Queremos saber la fecha exacta del fin del mundo.
Jesús estaba entre ellos como Emmanuel, Dios con nosotros. Y sin embargo, ellos no lo reconocieron. Estaban buscando signos prodigiosos y sin embargo Jesús les dijo, “El Reino de Dios está entre ustedes”. El Espíritu Santo está dentro de nosotros y presente a nuestro alrededor. ¿Reconocemos el Espíritu Santo hoy en día? ¿Vemos la presencia de Dios en medio de nosotros?

Sin embargo, Jesús nos dice: “No temas.” Él nos pide que pongamos toda nuestra confianza en Él. Él prometió que nunca nos abandonaría; que Él estaría con nosotros hasta el fin del mundo.
Así que primero estamos llamados a ser discípulos (seguidores, estudiantes) de Jesús. Luego Él nos envía al mundo para compartir la Buena Nueva como Sus apóstoles, para hacer discípulos de todas las naciones. Estamos llamados a ayudar a otros a reconocer la presencia de Dios en nuestros hogares, lugares de trabajo, escuelas y entornos.
Jesucristo es el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida. Él es la respuesta a todos nuestros males. Él es el único en el que debemos poner nuestra confianza. No permitas que seas soplado por los vientos cambiantes. No construyas tu casa sobre una base débil. Construye tu casa sobre Cristo, la Roca.
En la Misa cuando el sacerdote eleva la Eucaristía, él repite las palabras de Juan el Bautista cuando vio a Jesús: “He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.” (Juan 1:29) Juan fue enviado a preparar el camino del Señor y señaló a Jesús a todos. Nosotros también estamos llamados a preparar el camino del Señor. Nosotros también estamos llamados a señalar a Jesús a nuestros amigos, familiares, vecinos, compañeros de trabajo – cualquiera que venga a nosotros en busca de Jesús.
