Thought for Friday, 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Jesus told his disciples this parable:
“The Kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins
who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
The foolish ones, when taking their lamps,
brought no oil with them,
but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.
Since the bridegroom was long delayed,
they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
At midnight, there was a cry,
‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.
The foolish ones said to the wise,
‘Give us some of your oil,
for our lamps are going out.’
But the wise ones replied,
‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you.
Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’
While they went off to buy it,
the bridegroom came
and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him.
Then the door was locked.
Afterwards the other virgins came and said,
‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’
But he said in reply,
‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’
Therefore, stay awake,
for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

=======================================

This is the second Gospel reading this week where we hear Jesus say, “I say to you, I do not know you” to someone who is knocking on the doors of heaven.  This can be frightening for all of us who want to be on the other side of that door for all eternity, with God experiencing the joys of heaven.  So what do we need to do, according to this reading, to enter heaven?  We need to be ready.

Are you ready right now if Jesus came to take you home?

Is your lamp burning brightly at this moment?

This is the importance of being vigilant in prayer, fasting and almsgiving every day of our lives.  In order to be ready for the Lord’s coming, we need to be developing our relationship with Jesus on a daily basis.

Do I spend quality time in prayer every day with the Lord, away from all the distractions of cell phones and television?

Do I study my faith regularly so as to deepen my love of the Lord and His Church?

Do I put my faith into loving action daily?

Do I have a plan each day to share my faith with someone in word or action?

Every day around the world people are dying.  Some of them are prepared and ready to meet their Maker.  Others are completely surprised and shocked.  Some will hear the Lord’s voice say, “Welcome, my good and faithful servant.”  Others will hear, “Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.”

Our spiritual life doesn’t just happen by accident.  We don’t fall in to good habits.  We need to be intentional.  We need to have a plan.  What is your plan to grow in holiness today and each day for the rest of your life?

God bless,

Fr. Burke

Here is the Spanish translation:

MatEO 25:1-13

no trajeron consigo aceite;
“Denos de su aceite;
Mientras iban a comprarlo,

Fr. Burke
